I haven't researched any of this, but all the talk in here about the Utility filing bankrupt, lawsuits, and shutting power for 5 days at a time sounds like the utility is playing the get the "people" upset card to get the government to step in ($$$$$$$$).

Thanks Smitty77 and CA Traveler good posts and what I was looking for. A few things I am kinda set on. Realize, I do all my own maintenance. - I like the idea of a side radiator for engine access alone. - Propane/Electric water heater is fine as that's what we've had and make it work fine. Aqua-hot sounds interesting, but sounds like more to break. -Definitely want a 3-way fridge, I know residential units work better, but again, we are used to propane and it's drawbacks and I don't have to worry about always having electric. We do boondock some. -Large propane supply, due to above two reasons. -definitely experience inside with slides in, with our current RV there is almost the same maneuverability with the slide in, we learned that real early on when looking at C's. -Raises Rail / Full basement is basically a must have. -We actually like a mid-entry door, but coaches that have them are few and far between. - Don't have much an opinion on air vs hydraulic leveling, tell me your experience. I'm aware on how both work....just not pro's and con's. -NEVER Heated floors....the wife would expect them at home. :) -Jake Brake preferred, but not a deal killer if exhaust brake. -Larger tanks the better, we stay at a lot of State parks that have electric only.With larger tanks we can avoid the line at the dump station and just head home. We have a county dump station at our local fairgrounds for free 2 miles from our house.

Thanks for all the replies. For clarification, we still have 2 of our kids that go with us, even if for only a few more years, our youngest is 15. Plus we look forward to taking and spoiling grand kids once we have them. Plus 3 weeks or so on the road with my beautiful wife .....let's just say a smaller than our current 31' isn't going to cut it. Also, our plan (LOL, I know how these change) is to have this one until closer to retirement and then buy a newer one.

Help Switching to 40' Pusher

I'm going to be buying a Diesel Pusher within the next year and looking for advice on what to expect moving up from a Class C. A little background, we have had TT's of various sizes and moved up to a 31' Class C - 4 years ago. While I have never driven a bus-sized vehicle, I'm not concerned much at all, I've towed everything from a small TT to my 42' 5th wheel race hauler. So, I'm not too concerned about learning to drive the bus. I'm looking at 40' pushers, 2008-2012 vintage, most with 330HP ISC's, 950 lbs ft, some with 400 HP ISL's, 1,200 lbs ft. Single rear axle, no tag's...mostly due to price and extra length, I have heard they drive better though. Mostly what I'm looking for is what to expect being different than camping with a C. My wife and I are looking at retirement in 12 years or so and want to get our feet wet travelling for several weeks at a time. We don't expect to fulltime, but once retired 3-4 months during the winter we would chase the nice weather.So, besides the obvious height difference to watch out for, what else is majorly different I should be looking out for? RE: TPO roof adhesive

Go to a local commercial roofer and ask them if they have any. It comes in 5 gallon pails, so bring a quart size paint can you can get at Lowes, etc. We give stuff like that away all the time to do-it-yourselfer's . While you are there, ask around for a roofer who might want to make a few extra bucks. If it's TPO like you state, he can cut it open, glue it down and weld a patch over it. Yes, you can use eternabond or a peel and stick TPO product for the patch. But if a new piece is heat welded to the area, it will again be a monolithic preference by far. Good Luck !

Where are you located? Here in Upstate NY we have a company called Capabilities. They hire and train people with disabilities. Anyway, one of the services they offer is an upholstery shop that does very good work at a cheap price. I believe they are government funded, so their pricing is very reasonable. I've had them do some work on a buddies boat and the craftsmanship was very nice...and it was cheap. Maybe your area has a similar facility. I have no idea if this is a national program or just local.

No way this cost 2mil, I bet 10K max. On a serious note, I cannot understand why people that buy electric vehicles are constantly patting themselves on the back about "saving the environment". Have they ever researched the Lithium and Cobalt mines and their environmental impact? I agree that it may be less than carbon emissions of ICE, but far from "saving the planet"by buying an EV. Personally, I'm really intrigued by EV vehicles and more power to the people that step up and buy. But, quit waving your zero emission flag.

The shocks, springs, air bags, etc are not going to cause a vibration. Waste of money if they are good. Take it to a different tire shop and pay them to balance the tires, and yes, definitely find one with the Hunter Road Force balancer mentioned previously. When the other shop either fixes the balance or finds a bad tire, then take the bills back to the original installer.

RE: Leveling Jacks pro & con

I installed Bigfoot jacks on my 31'. Love them. Really adds in the stability when "walking around" inside. The big "feet" that they use haven't needed any additional blocking so far after 2 years use, although I do carry blocks in case. I bought mine on sale for $1,995 and installed them myself. If they were 2-3 times that cost, I probably could have lived without them, but very happy to have them.

Assuming this isn't a new unit, replace the valve. They are cheap and easy to replace, the gaskets get worn after a while and leak.

jy is correct...but allow me to add to that. Tow/Haul not only changes the shift points of the transmission, allowing it to hold a gear longer for towing or hilly climbs, it also functions as a "transmission brake" when going downhill. jy mentions this as well. I recommend going to Ford website and you can download a PDF of the chassis owners manual, which should be a must for a chassis you are not familiar with. A landslide has 74W closed. They are saying Wednesday to re-open...but that has changed from Monday and so on. Better check that it's open when you go, if you decide on that way. I am heading that way Friday to the Tail of the Dragon. I know that's not the route you asked about, just a heads up.

RE: Ford v10 serpentine belt replacement

I feel they are pretty easy to replace, your results may vary. Not required to go to the dealer, not many stock belts anymore anyway. Get a quality belt, I like Gates personally, Napa also good (and possibly made by gates). If the routing diagram sticker is missing under the hood, draw it on a piece of paper before taking it off, it's very easy to get it confused if you try and go by memory. While it's off check all the idler pulleys for excessive play or dragging in bearing, they are cheap and easy to replace now. Good Luck!

Yep ! We don't use Dawn, just because we haven't. We put in our dishwasher soap, Cascade. Always keeps the level sensors working and the smell down. It's the grease cutting agents in these type of soaps that keep the solids from forming. Good Advice.

re: 5 Star Tune.. would like to hear from anyone who has installed it on a class c. I have it on mine. Really helped the transmission, firmer more positive shifts, and less gear hunting. It definitely has more power too, how much ? Negligible maybe, you won't necessarily feel it in the seat of your pants but once you get to a familiar hill or highway, you'll realize that yes it has more power. Mileage was improved maybe slightly, .5 mpg or so, but absolutely scoots up the hills better. A good tune will absolutely not decrease engine life, Mike @ 5-Star knows these coaches and has the tune dialed in. Personally , I doubt you'll regret it. Edit: Also, if you ever decide to upgrade the exhaust, air intake, etc, Mike can email you an updated tune to reflect the changes.

I have an 11-ton diesel that pulls Donner Summit in 12th gear and 75 mph. That said don't ask about price, near-insane amount of time and effort. My experience with exhaust headers is They char everything around them They leak Run the rig through a splat of cold water and snap-po a crack Triple jointed tools needed to change spark plugs Oh joy! A $130 set of Jacobs super-insulated spark plug wires is in your future Mouse milk improvement in power. jcobs I hear what you're saying, and you're old school. But, headers on a Ford V-10 are no where near the plugs and wires. The Banks headers and exhaust really wake the V-10 up (We installed a ton of them), but Bank's sure is proud of his products. Hard to swallow $2,500-$3,000 on headers and exhaust, plus installation, IMO.
