RE: Question about Onan Generator

the Emerald III had a small (1 amp) charging system, using a stator winding labeled the "B" winding. this winding operated the electric choke heater on older models, and provided enough 12v, using a resistor and diode on control board for fuel pump and ignition system, and controls. Newer (last 20 years or so) generators relied on RV converter to keep batteries from discharging. Commercial versions all have 12v charging systems. BTW...NEVER a good idea to disconnect battery from generator when running. Like a car alternator, you risk shocking and damaging control board components.

RE: WIX oil filter for Onan genny?

As an Onan dealer for 30+ yrs, have changed literally thousands of o.f.'s on Onan gennys. For current gas/LP sets, I use the Onan filter. Have used Wix/Napa, and had couple of instances where filter loosened up and leaked. Overall, I think Wix/Napa is good quality filter, 'tho. Price is about same, so I stay with factory part. For older units, and diesels, use mostly Fleetguard, because , as O.P. stated, they are owned by Cummins,( as is Onan). For diesel air filters, I use some Onan, but mostly Kubota parts, as I have better pricing on these.

RE: My generac diesel generator only runs with prime button

Hey, what can I say...I guess I am just a ""capitalist....and since my post was not addressed to you, you probably did the right thing by not reading it...probably would have bored you anyway

RE: My generac diesel generator only runs with prime button

THE PREVIOUS POST PRETTY MUCH COVERS ALL TH POSSIBLE PROBLEMS FOR YOUR SYMPTOMS. THE PRIME BUTTON IS ACTUALLY A PRE-HEAT (GLOW PLUG) SWITCH THAT ALSO RUNS THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP TO PRIME THE FUEL SYSTEM. THIS SWITCH WHEN ENERGIZED BYPASSES THE CONTROL BOARD AND APPLYS POWER DIRECTLY TO FUEL PUMP AND RUN SOLENOID. WHEN CRANKING, AS GENERATOR COMES UP TO SPEED AND A.C. VOLTAGE IS PRODUCED, THE CONTROL BOARD TAKES OVER, AND SUPPLIES POWER TO FUEL PUMP AND RUN SOLENOID. THEN YOU RELEASE START SWITCH, AND IT CONTINUES TO RUN, iF THE GEN SHUTS OFF WHEN YOU RELEASE THE SWITCH, THEN YOU LIKELY HAVE A BAD CONTROL BOARD, OR NO A.C. POWER BEING PRODUCED FROM GENERATOR. lIKELY CAUSES OF NO A.C. POWER ARE FIELD BRUSH WORN OUT OR STUCK, NOT CONTACTING ROTOR SLIP RINGS, BAD VOLTAGE REGULATOR, OR (WORST CASE)OPEN OR SHORTED WINDINGS IN GEN ROTOR OR STATOR. YOU CAN"T JUST JUMPER THE GLOW/PLUG/PRIME SWITCH, FOR VERY LONG, OR YOU WILL OVERHEAT GLOW PLUGS AND DESTROY THEM. THIS IS A VERY DIFFICULT SYSTEM TO DIAGNOSE, AND AS O.P. SAID PARTS ARE GETTING TO BE SOMEWHAT OF A CHALLENGE. IF GEN END HAS GONE BAD (ROTOR OR STATOR) SET IS PROBABLY NOT COST EFFECTIVE TO REPAIR, THE CONTROL BOARDS ARE AVAILABLE, SEVERAL HUNDRED $$, AND MAY BE ALL YOU NEED.

A model # would be helpful; NP65, 75, 80D? QP75D ?

RE: Onan Generator Fault Code 2- Low oil pressure

the oil pressure switch on that unit is a NC type switch, and it is "closed " to ground with no oil pressure. the switch "opens" on rising o.p., (about 7-9 psi) . The switch is indeed difficult to access without being able to remove top and side panels from set. these switches dont usually fail on an intermittent basis, but is possible. I have more problems with leaking than not working correctly. Not likely to be a problem with oil pump pick-up, as it happen on every start-up, and Kubota's quality control is very high. Possible that there is moisture/corrosion in wire harness connector to Inverter-controller, shorting out oil switch wire...I've run into this before. Would advise not to overfill oil level very much, as previous post said, that can cause oil to churn and foam in crankcase, tricking switch to close.

RE: Onan generator

A shop that is familiar with these generators, and is set up correctly should be able to change the oil and oil filter in about 15 min. air filter another 15 min, as the coolant overflow tank has to be removed for access to air cleaner housing. Fuel filter is a little trickier, as some fuel system bleeding/priming is required. overall should be able to do in an hour, including clean up. Oil and filter about $50, air and fuel filters about $25 each (Onan list prices)
