RE: pickup bed tent

I used to sleep in my pickup occasionally, one nighters mostly. I bought an ARE topper that had a full back hatch. That is the tail gate was removed. I could open the whole hatch or just open the little glass door for personal entry. I loved that truck cap, wouldn't buy any other.

Some Great tent Camping!

I jettisoned my pickup and travel trailer a few years back. I either tent camp or in my 8' cargo trailer. So my needs are less and needless to say I don't wish to pay $50- $75 a night. I am hoping we can share a few nice spots for us who need few amenities or perhaps none other than a place to rest. My first contribution shall be Rogers Rock Campground in Hague, NY on Lake George. This campground is on the north end of the lake and has a lot of shoreline although few campsites are on the water and these are generally booked months in advance in July and Aug. The sites are all dirt, well shaded, have a firepit and picnic table. There are limited hours for generators and people are generally considerate. There are boat moorings campers can rent, a boat launch and lots of room to stash car toppers(kayaks, canoes) near the water. The lake is surrounded by mountains. Hiking opportunities are endless in the area.It is a state campground listed under the DEC. Non residents are charged an extra $5/ night but still a bargain under $30 on a gorgeous lake.

RE: Tent Camping Forum

I am 63. Got rid of rv, couldn't justify the pick up payments since I retired and don't have to boom out for work. I bought a small cargo trailer which I pull behind a Ford Edge. If I camp for a week or more I may set up a tent for a little more room. If not I have a bed, fridge, solar panels in/on the trailer. In the tent I like to sleep on an air mattress, makes all the difference at my age. I want to share a few nice spots I found to tent camp in FL. Ocala National Forest near any of the springs. Alexander Springs, Salt Springs and Juniper Springs. All have nice swimming areas with NO alligators! Hiking trails etc. Salt Springs had about 25 full hookups for walkups and more you can reserve. And about 50 tent sites!Nice shaded area. Another one I enjoyed which is much easier to book than the hookup sites is St Lucie South on the St Lucie River in Stuart. The few hookup sites are nearly impossible to reserve but there are 3 tent sites right on the water. Not much sought after. You park right across from site, Lots of boats and wildlife you can enjoy from your site. OK showers. Nice picnic areas and trails.

RE: New dual 6v's. Need some advice plz

Thanks much for the info. I may have to go that way at some point, but for now I ordered a Pro Logix 2320 charger. $89.97 According to specs will go on float at 14.3 volts. That should allow me to run refrigerator(110v) at night along with fan etc. Well see how it goes! Update: hooked up new charger and charged right up over 14 volts. Very happy! Thank you for educating me on trickle chargers.

RE: New dual 6v's. Need some advice plz

Thanks for the info, but I do not have an RV. I used to though. Now I have a cargo trailer with a solar setup. I am looking for a good charger that can be plugged into a 2000 watt portable generator when I am parked in the shade. Need something that will top off batteries not stop charging at 12.5 or there abouts.

RE: Searching for a summer campground

New England and Up state NY have tons of seasonal campgrounds. They shut down in winter so homesteaders aren't an issue. Won't get into particular camp grounds but its a heck of a lot cooler than NC!

National Park and National Forests Bummer

I camp in National Forest Campgrounds around my home state and with my senior pass I get 1/2 price camping. To my surprise I got a measely 10% discount in the Everglades campground. Huh? It's under a contractor and they set their own rates. I came back from a day of exploring. Since I took my tiny camper I left items on the picnic table and an orange cone in the pullout as instructed. Got home at supper and my spot was occupied. At the checkin booth were 2 other parties that had the same problem. And try to find these darn websites if you try to reserve a site. Very difficult. Then I went up to Ocala National Forest. To enjoy the developed part of the parks we have to pay. These contractors didn't build them but our senior pass is no good there. Whats next? Anyone else run into this situation?

RE: Window AC to roof air , hare brained idea.

I remember living in vegas one year, my 13500BTU (drew 12 amps) barely kept my trailer, a 32' HR TT with slideout, cool some days. And I was afraid of tripping the main with a dog in the trailer all day. My next door neighbor was a "tin knocker" and built a little insulated house over his a/c. I bought a cheap 5000btu that drew 5 amps in my emergency window in the bedroom. Put a piece of styrofoam over to give it a bit of sun shield. It blew the roof top out of the water. Go for it!

RE: New dual 6v's. Need some advice plz

I camp from a cargo trailer now with solar panels. When I charge my batteries from my solar panels they show a charge of up to 14.4 volts. But if I charge batteries off of a trickle charger the highest they get is 12.4. Any suggestions on a charger I can use in shady spots that will take it up? Ill be charging from a 2000w generator.
