RE: US Border agent gave my passport to.....??

Mistakes happen, glad it was taken care of quickly. It could of been bad for both of you had you not noticed the mistake. Surprised the other guy didn't look at the passport when it was returned to him. It would have been 'interesting' if he hadn't come back the same day, for sure. I was already IN, so it would have to have been reported as Lost or Stolen by next day. Then who was going to pay for THAT? And all the questions that would have come my way everytime I crossed. And yes..if he had looked, but..he didn't. Gary

RE: US Border agent gave my passport to.....??

How would they get an extra passport. The previous guy left without asking for his passport back? Who does that? You are entering a foreign country, and you are going to leave the border without getting your passport back from the agent? Pretty strange set of circumstances involved here. Maybe I wasn't clear. I wasn't entering...I was already IN....The other driver was given MY passport, in error, obviously.I could have stayed at the border...this happened at 10:30 am and I could have sat there for 12+hours. They released me to carry on into town and in a later phone call with the afternoon supervisor, I informed him that I was camping out..and where, but he didn't care...and that I would be back in the morning. RE: US Border agent gave my passport to.....??

This is why I have both a passport and a passport card. The card is not usable for international air travel but can serve as interim proof of citizenship should the passport be lost or stolen. I doubt the guard did anything nefarious. Yes, it should be reported to make sure procedure is being followed. If the guard commented "it doesn't look like you" than surely your pic doesn't look like the other guy either and most likely couldn't be used for any illegal activity. The guard did nothing nefarious. It was simply an error and I didn't have to report it...the Supervisor was more than just a little upset. Gary

RE: US Border agent gave my passport to.....??

I am sorry, your passport should never leave your sight!! When a driver is directed to a secondary examination, the passport is 'held' by BP agents until an agent is assigned to your vehicle. THAT agent returns the passport. Saying no is always an option. They will simply turn your around. And maybe not even that..they may take a particular interest in your and your vehicle. Gary

US Border agent gave my passport to.....??

For anyone that has border crossing concerns....Monday morning, crossing at Oroville, get the usual Agriculture inspection. Pull over to the left and wait for the agent. Agent finally saunters over...holds up the passport and observes..."you don't look much like this anymore" as he gives me my passport. As I hand it back..`because that`s not mine`. The agent in the kiosk had given my passport to another driver and they were long gone. Long story short...they knew the other driver and hoped he`d be back sometime in the day. I was released into the US and I overnighted up on the Similkameen. Got it back this morning at 9am. Gary Haupt

RE: Fall colours in Wa

That's a beautiful state even without the fall colors. I wonder though why you'll be amazed with WA. You are from BC where I bet, it's more colorful come autumn, lol. I find the fall colors here quite beautiful. No need to travel to Canada to see them. You'll be happier staying where you are. Travel has a tendency to broaden one's horizons. Gary

WA SR2 has colors in the Tumwater Canyon west of Leavenworth. Thanks for the hint. I am sitting in Omak looking at which way...I like yours. Gary

Fall colours in Wa

I hope. Off for a two week jaunt. Only a week in the state but that will see me over the mountinais and exploring several craft breweries along the way. The Seattle...more craft places. If you see the white 4x4 C...wave hi, eh... Gary Haupt

RE: Some Photos of Class C's from a show yesterday

Just slightly off topic but where does the money come from to buy a decent Class C? I'm thinking the cost approaches $100K! That's more than some houses. No need to buy a new one, Dick. Lots of good used ones out there. By far, the best advice is...don't go into debt for a buggy. Get the one you can afford. Gary Haupt

RE: New to RVing

Leaks..as mentioned are the killer to be super watchful of. It's not the water coming in, it's the rot that is the result of the water coming. Do a Google search on wood rot and it's health issues. Be aware too, that fixing an RV that has the wood rot is a huge HUGE expense. One you do not want. IF you are handy and can repair yourself? That is a whole different story. One answer...maybe the answer, is to do your research on RV's that are built using aluminum framing. Don't get trapped buying an RV that is water damaged. Everything, anything, else can be managed. Not water damage/rot. Gary Haupt

Out of the blue....

One of the best things about belonging to RV.Net are the people I have met, face 2 face. I have had the pleasure of meeting 20? people and their families. I have become personal pals with Off-Pavement and pianotuna and Bill Delory in Florida. and, as is always the case, some I have met we just didn't see eye to eye, but that in no way diminishes the pure joy of having met them. Last week I received an E from a member that is from Chicago, but was just up the road in Kelowna and suggested maybe we could meet for coffee. Ultimately Aslam and his wife and 3 kids ended up on our curb for 24 hours. The Hussiens are on quite an RV adventure and are now on their way home having visited Yukon and Alaska and many points in between. I love it when that happens....please...don't be shy. Stop in and say hi. We can offer power and laundry and some supper. https://i.imgur.com/X1AsBS2.jpg]https://i.imgur.com/X1AsBS2.jpg Gary Haupt

RE: I need some SIM card schoolin....

We are with Rogers in Canada. They have a roam like home plan but I find it is too expensive for long term travel to the US. We have our phones suspended in Canada with a small fee to hold the numbers. We then insert a US sim card into our phones in the US. We use Tracfone which is available at Walmart. You phone must be unlocked to be able to do this. By law in Canada all cell providers must unlock your phone at no charge. I suggest that you contact Rogers to verify that your phones are unlocked. With Tracfone you add time for either talk or data as needed. You buy the cards at Walmart or you can add time online. We have found that coverage is excellent. We have used Tracfone from the Northeast of the US to the bottom of Florida and across the Gulf to San Diego and LA. It has been fine in just about every spot including areas out in the desert boondocking. If you have questions please PM me. THIS is what I sought...thank you. And yes, I will pm you if I have other questions. Gary

RE: I need some SIM card schoolin....

Gary, I think Rogers teams up with AT&T in the USA, which has the 2nd best coverage. So..the problem is communications...the navigator used the phone as her constant companion for info and we were at 350 for one month and 400 the next. Some of this information is only now coming to light. Thus my searching for a better alternative. Gary

RE: I need some SIM card schoolin....

Hi Gary, I hope you will have a fun trip! Bell Canada has a plan that allows use of Data in USA. It is far less than $170 per month. I'd be surprized if Telus did not have a similar choice. Here is a link to the Telus: https://www.telus.com/en/bc/mobility/plans?hash=international-plans&INTCMP=VAN_canadaus Bell Canada: https://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Cell_phone_plans/Unlimited-plans Don..we are with Rogers at the moment and I suspect that the plans are all similar. We pay 7.50 a day for any cross border usage with a 15 day per month cap. I have no idea where I got the original amount. Maybe that isn't such a terrible price, in hindsight. Gary

I need some SIM card schoolin....

We are going into the US for 4 months...and using our provider runs us about 112.50 a month. The navigator used the phone as her constant companion for info and we were at 350 for one month and 400 the next. I am trying to understand the swapping out of SIM cards. My understanding is that I get a new SIM and then sign up for an International phone plan with X number of data plans. I get an assigned number for use with that SIM card? and can then make and receive calls to that number...? So far so good? If there is a better way I am all eyes. Gary Haupt

RE: Alaska cancels Prince Rupert, B.C., ferry service

Geeezus...stop pouting because Canadian laws apply in Canada. Gary Haupt Canadian laws are a pita and usually legislative overkill. Decades of bureaucrats writing them, without sensible oversight, has created a labyrinth of redundancy and confusion. Just sayin'. They actually state in the Canada Firearms Act that foreign "guests" are allowed to carry/transport/store/etc. while in our country, in many cases. Which begs the question, why not CBP agents in Prince Rupert? Local bylaw? BC provincial law? Nothing to do with firearms in Canada would surprise me now since the Trudeau/Goodale/Blair trio got their mitts on it. Just makes the topic all the more confusing. Now..having re-read the article, it is clear that this a way for the State of Alaska to dump the run as a cost cutting measure. Plus, the dock facility needs to be upgraded, no doubt NOT on Alaska's nickel. As for CBS..they are in Prince Rupert, but I am guessing that providing an armed escort service for the the ferry crew does not fall under their duties. I have to wonder..how was this managed in the past? Was there an armed US Border service person on-board? Gary
