RE: traveling during US Thanksgiving

Don't try to park in a Walmart on Black Friday. LOL ! We got all settled in a Walmart on the Friday night of New Years weekend. All was ok then the craziness started with traffic after work. It was next thing to a Black Friday experience except it slowed down eventually.

RE: Dog Attack

1). Our local Farmers Market clearly states “due to state health laws - no pets allowed”. They bring them anyway. 2). I know of people out walking who have been bitten by a dog that ran at them. 3). I wish there would be a National law that if a dog is taken out (for any reason) it should be muzzled. 4). I love dogs but I don’t want one for the liability of it.

RE: A Very Quiet Halloween

We always prepare for 50 which is enough here. Nice evening, we ran out so we turned off the light & shut the door. Bell rang twice after that - suppose I could’ve found some quarters for them but I had a project I was working on so I didn’t answer. No doubt they had a good supply by that time so they didn’t “starve”.

RE: Group Camping Food Planning Question

We were invited to “Thanksgiving in July” and that’s exactly what it was. 3 families made turkey & all the trimmings & had several Dutch Ovens going. (we were guests- woo hoo )

RE: Places To dine

I have the app “Trip Advisor.” for this. I’m faithful about leaving my comment too.

RE: Trains

For years, my husband took a rural hard surface road early in the morning on the way to work. People with ear buds were running out there and not always on the side of the road either. He had many scares when they’d suddenly appear in his headlights. Not everyone wears reflective gear & they hear nothing with ear buds. Glad to be done with that.

RE: Favorite Christmas recipes?

I grew up on home grown goose for Christmas but my kids don’t care for it so we’ve done prime rib. From here on - it will be 2-3 kinds of soup because we get them married and then they show up whenever. Dessert will never change - rice pudding with an almond hidden in one dish. The “lucky one” gets a small gift (maybe an ornament with the year on it. ). I bake 3 things, my limit. 2 are old, 1 is something new. Add candies wrapped in red, green, silver - it’s enough.

RE: Walmart Overcharge

We love our neighborhood grocery but it’s closed Sundays & I’m glad for them. Sometimes on Sunday I need something so I go to our big Midwest grocery chain. They’re high, in my opinion, but if they have a decent price on something, I get it then. I can promise you, it almost always takes a Manager to be paged to get it right because I’m overcharged. They had 80% hamburger $1.78/lb (regular $3.99). Of course, they were out - so I get a rain check. When I picked up my hamburger (limit 4 pounds) I show her the rain check & she charges me 4 x $2.21. Really ? She couldn’t see it my way so we get the manager involved. $2.21 is my SAVINGS ! Today I paid for 2 concession things ($6 & $2.50). I was charged $10.00 ! So I had to explain my bill was $8.50. She tried to justify her mistake by saying she was under the impression I got $5 large size & blamed me for not telling her such. ( she clearly saw I had small size $2.50 ) but even at that, she’s still wrong because $5 + $6 is $11. My oh my !

RE: Hardwood Floor Cleaner

Remember the old Stanley products ? You can still find dealers but not many. I use my Stanley wool dust mop. If I need to wipe the floor, I use water with a bit of white vinegar & wring out my rag thoroughly.

RE: Build an a-frame?

Where does stuff go ? We have an Aliner with twin beds. We opened up the areas under both beds & reenforced the openings. Now we have totes (minus lids) that fit perfectly there. Pull out just like real drawers. We had new 25” wide cushions made for dining table (leave table home). Built a cabinet across front for dishes & groceries. Ours has sliding doors, I’ve seen one that is divided into 3 bins so access is from top by lifting the lid. Very workable.

Guide for camping at Corps of Engineers CG

I’m trying to decide between buying - 1). RV Camping in C.O.E: Guide to 644 Campgrounds etc etc or 2). The Wright Guide to Camping w/C.O.E. Not personally seen either. Opinions please ?

RE: Tomatoes

speaking of wierd deserts, my grandmother used to bake "tomato soup cakes" pretty often. Even though tomato soup was an ingredient, the cake was basically chocolate. You didn't taste the soup at all. I suppose it added some sort of richness to the cake, but I'm not sure. There’s a spice cake with tomato soup in it. I made it once to take to a gathering. It’s good.

RE: Traveling with glass

No breakage, ever. One time the refrigerator door came open and I had plastic containers on the floor. Bean soup stayed upright (lucky there !). I found hard boiled eggs all over but unhurt. I find it very important to carry an empty glass jar for any cooking grease or liquid. Easy to dump in the trash & it’s not my problem anymore.

RE: Cookbooks for young cooks

Eight years old? What is the problem with her using the same books her mother would use? May need to pick the simpler recipes to start, but she would learn more from reading to chose. Agree here
