RE: Trying to figure out best 5th wheel? Advice appreciated

New Horizons is excellent, but you need a truck greater than a 350 or 3500 to tow it.

RE: Trying to figure out best 5th wheel? Advice appreciated

Research, research. It will take time and a lot of reading. The "best" rV for you might not be what the other person finds important. When I purchased my Carriage Cameo in 2012 I researched 5ers for over 6 months. I love my unit and have had near zero problems. I wanted a 4 season unit, constructed well and had good capacity. It is too bad they are out of business. Be sure you can tow what you get, maintain it well, and don't abuse it. Check ratings.

RE: Awning Cleaning Solution

Beach might weaken the fabric. i use a mixture of Dawn and Murphy Soap. Or you can use just one.

RE: Should I be concerned about my hitch?

The hitch looks pretty beat up and sorry to say abused. When you see rust start that is when you should address it and clean it, then repaint. I have had some rust on my plate, but I wire brushed it and repainted it. Do you use a Nylon disk between the hitch and trailer. That supplies lubrication so you do not have metal to metal contact. Do not use grease. Does any area of the hitch show cracks. When you pull the handle does it open and close easily? If you have an RV repair shop near you, it might be a minimal fee to get an expert opinion.

RE: How long can you go on a 50 amp extension cord?

I have gone with the cord that came with my unit and an extension. ?? 50'. I do not remember the formula for voltage drop, but you should be okay. Do you have a surge/EMS protector? This might assist.

RE: Winter travel

The only reason you would leave the heat on while traveling is so your water won't freeze. Just drain the lines. A holding tank won't freeze in a short days travel. Fridge yes, leave on.

RE: What truck do I need to pull this trailer

When I purchased my diesel, I bought it for the CC trip. The torque is needed for the mountains. Other than that gas will do just fine. Keep in mind a diesel engine is more expensive to purchase than a gas and more expensive to maintain. To give you an idea. Oil change.... 8 qts + filter. I do it myself and it costs about $80. You also have the fuel filter. Also, fuel additives. No diesels arn't cheap but they do make pulling easier. Check to see what each truck can tow. If you are really under the weight, maybe a gas will work. Do not over purchase. Plan on $2000 for repairs on a cc trip, minimum.

RE: What truck do I need to pull this trailer

I have a 2006 F-350 with all the additions you are describing. We have done the cross country trip, but also have had many repairs on the truck. I have spoken to many truck owners and they all swear by their trucks, but then talking further have found out they ALL have their issues. Get what you want and feel comfortable with. Payload wise, I think Ford or GMC CHevy) are your best bets for towing torque you will need in the mountains.

RE: Does RV antifreeze go bad?

I am not at home base now, but I use it in my washer which is in my shed when the temps drop. I don't know if it has a expiration date on it. Mine is going on 2 years old and I know that it was good at 1 yr when used last year. Good question. Just thought of something. Take a cup put some in it and see if it freezes in your frezzer?? If it does it goes bad.

Replacing furnature

We have a 40' Cameo and the faux furniture is pealing and want to replace it. Anyone replace chairs and couch in their RV with a reasonable good quality unit. The couch bed has only been slept in 1X. Sorry to have to trash it because the fake leather did not hold up. We are looking for 2 recliners and the couch/bed combo if we can.
We are now looking for fabric. ? Microfiber.

RE: Battery question

It is possible one of the meters is off calibration. But I believe 13.6 is correct with no load. I would bring them back where you purchased and have them check with their meter and do a cell check.

RE: Real-life experience blocks to aid 6-point leveling system

I found that I would lift my tires off the ground on many occasions when on uneven ground without using the leveling blocks. I don't want my tires off the ground EVER!
You might find that necessary to do your breaks or a flat tire.

RE: Real-life experience blocks to aid 6-point leveling system

Yes. I have 6x6 blocks. Sometimes the ground is so far off the levers can't do their job. The less travel you have, the shorter the shaft the more stable you will be. If for no other reason, I use the blocks to help keep the landing pads clean and out of the dirt.

RE: smoking diesel exhaust

The guy is asking a legitimate question and wants to solve a problem. No need to penalize him. I am sure many of you have asked questions before that are common sense to others, but not you. Give they fellow RVer a break.

RE: smoking diesel exhaust

Looked up black smoke from diesel on internet and results said over-fueling. Fuel injector wear. Check it out on the net for your model.

From complaints often posted on here, I would go with any company OTHER than Good Sam.
NO GOOD SAM. I have NC Farm Bureau and in the past Progressive, but did not like them. Keep raising policy amount.

RE: Stairs not working

I am not familiar with auto-stairs, but you seemed to be replacing a lot of parts. Are there and micro switches on the steps that might be sticking and shutting the stair off prematurely? Any binds in the guides or supports? Do you have a fuse or a circuit breaker? If a breaker, perhaps it is drawing too much current, overheating and shutting down. Like a thermal fuse. All else fails, get steps or manual stairs.
