RE: What do you shut off when leaving for a trip

One winter with the water off, my furnace quit. It got cold enough for the shutoff valve to freeze and rupture. By the time I returned in a couple months, 23,000 gal of water had gone into my finished basement. Now I have the township shut the water off at the curb.

RE: Missouri hwy 19

Thanks everyone! We are in no hurry and want to check out Cuba, Mo. A bit further south would take you to Echo Bluff State Park. Very new with FHU sites, lodge, restaurant and free roaming wild (not very) horses.

RE: Missouri hwy 19

Yes, I have. It’s windy and a little hilly but not enough so to avoid. Don’t expect to make very good time though. I was pulling a 30’ FW with a long bed, crew cab dually. No white knuckles but it took awhile.

RE: Combined home computers reach exaflop levels

Allow others access to my computers based on this article? No There was a project S.E.T.I. that did this and has done it for years. It was even featured on an episode of the TV show JAG but the program is in fact real (I know as I was part of it). now there is danger of someone faking such a program but what SETI did was set you up with a screen saver. a packet of data was downloaded and when your computer went into screensaver mode it worked on it. so this may well be a legit program I don't do screen savers any more. Ditto to all that. I had several computers working on SETI for years. Caution is definitely called for though. I wouldn’t touch it unless I was VERY sure I knew who I was dealing with and what they were doing.

RE: General Question About Routers

Are you talking about a cellular solution for internet or an internet connection via cable, like Century Link or Comcast? Very good question. All cellular mobile hotspots are routers. All routers are not cellular mobile hotspots.

RE: The Coronavirus

Take a deep breath, relax and, most important of all, TURN THE TV OFF!!!

RE: Snowbird parks and Coronavirus

I’m one of the small handful that survived the Y2K carnage. In a few years global warming is going to kill us all. So why get excited about a little flu? Take a deep breath, relax and most importantly, TURN OFF THE TV.

RE: Suggest a TPMS.

I had Pressure Pro on 6 TV + 4 FW tires for years. Never tried another brand so I’m not sure how much my recommendation is worth but they did the job for me.

RE: Desert Southwest suggestions

Admittedly my tastes are a little out of the mainstream. I prefer remote spots with lots of hiking/exploring opportunities. Whittington Center is an NRA run hunting and shooting facility near Raton, NM. You don’t need to be a member or interested in either to visit. It is 10s of thousands of acres along the old Santa Fe Trail. There are many FHU sites, an old , restored mining town, miles of hiking and wildlife everywhere.

RE: dedicated charging station for phones, wifi, tablets

I’ve had a dedicated Charging Station for years. The dividers are useless but the charging works great for an assortment of gadgets.

RE: Washer/Dryer worth it?

Required equipment for me. I recently ended 8 years of nearly full time. I would have given up my AC before my washer & dryer.

RE: Mail Forwarding

For those who travel around and don't stay put could you give us a short lesson on how to get your mail. I know about agencies that will forward your mail, but how do you find places to have it sent to? I am only really worried about out tax paperwork that only seems to come snail mail. As mentioned in an earlier post, I received parcels and mail at a box at the UPS Store. I usually started by asking the campground office if I could send it there or whether any carriers delivered directly to campsites. If that didn’t work I checked online for a nearby Post Office that accepted General Delivery. Finally I’d check for a UPS Customer Center or UPS Store. Once I knew how and to where I wanted it sent I’d email my UPS Store and they’d get whatever they had on the way. I probably most often used USPS General Delivery. One hint. The smaller the Post Office the better. You can get lost in the shuffle at a large P. O. The small town one or two person Office knows everybody. They immediately notice a strange name. As soon as you walk in the door they connect an unfamiliar face with your package.

RE: Alternative satellite option?

I had a Trav’lr and a portable. Between obstacles, low satellite position and lack of Eastern Arc support, I used the portable most of the time. If I had it to do over, I would have passed on the Trav’lr entirely. Considering my personal travel and viewing preferences, it wasn’t worth the money. YMMV.

RE: Mail Forwarding services

lJR, what kind of $ are they charging? It looks like I can’t see any kind of cost without actually filling out the forms. Do they offer recycling/shredding of unwanted mail? I don’t remember the published rate, probably because I don’t think I ever paid it. There was always some kind of incentive for renewing. My last bill was $300 for 13 months. Of course you pay the usual packing and shipping when they forward. I had them discard junk mail but I never asked about shredding. They do offer that as a service in their store so I suppose they’d do it if you asked. They were always very accommodating about watching for something I was in a hurry to get.

RE: Mail Forwarding services

I was nearly full time for several years, rarely staying in one place for more than a couple months, often for a couple weeks. I used a box at my hometown UPS Store as my home address. They will accept anything from any carrier and forward anywhere by any carrier. Whenever I stopped somewhere for awhile I called or emailed and they forwarded whatever they had. Sometimes I used the campground address. Sometimes USPS General Delivery. Sometimes a UPS Customer Center or UPS Store. All in all it worked out pretty well.

RE: Not A Joke Top Off With Gasoline or Diesel

Oil is back down today. Panic is over. Half the spike is gone. https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/CL=F?p=CL=F dang it, I didn't fill in time... and by the time I do need to fill up, the crises will be completely over. Not to worry. I’m sure the next crisis is right around the corner.

RE: Not A Joke Top Off With Gasoline or Diesel

The world energy markets are much different than in pre-fracking days. We were the biggest consumer now we are also the biggest producer. If the Arabs don’t get back in production quickly they risk losing market share. Whatever price impact there is will be dampened somewhat by the commodity traders (aka: speculators) until things settle down.

RE: Southern Louisiana in November

I’ve spent many falls and winters around there. If you’re looking for weather like a northern summer you’ll be disappointed. I’d describe it as pleasantly cool days and chilly nights. There’s always the chance of a wild shift in either direction but it doesn’t last long.

RE: Long Distance 5th wheel

I had a TransferFlow across the bed auxiliary tank on a previous truck. I didn't even have to flip a switch, it was all automatic. I would highly recommend this system. Go here. ryoung I’ve had a couple of those. Most recently a 98 gal in an F-450. They did the job very nicely and I’d get another if I bought a new truck. BUT.... If price is the major consideration, forget about Transferflow.
