RE: Homeless Cat -- Now Spotacus' Legacy

Good news to hear about Leoghaire. It looks like we're going to get some cold and snowy weather this winter according to the farmer almanacs. Might be another trip in the offing.

RE: Meatloaf

Definitely. Have made it in a cast iron dutch oven and it's definitely a favorite around here. Try it with some smoke introduced as described by OP. You may never go back. Already have. Left the lid off the DO to smoke it.

Baked Mac and Cheese w/Green Chiles and Bacon

Made this for the family this weekend. Left off the cracker topping and it was still a keeper. Baked Macaroni and Cheese with Green Chiles and Bacon

RE: Rusty grille - How to avoid

I grill/BBQ almost every day. Over the past 45 years I have had many cheap gas grills, 3 charcoal and one smoker. The worst thing you can do to a grill with cast iron grates is to burn the food off after cooking and not seasoning the grates for the next use. I never clean my grill after use. I clean my grill when I am going to use it and season the grates. However, if you don't cook as often as I do then clean the grates after you cook and oil the grates. I live in a hot humid place so I now have a Weber Geneses III gas grill with heavy stainless steal grates (expensive but worth it). For my 34 year old Weber charcoal grill and smoker every few years I replace the grates. I will not have another grill with cast iron grates. I have also had grills with cast iron burners that did not last 2 years. I do love my cast iron pans. For camping I'm with you on using stainless steel grates especially in humid climates. My cast iron dutch ovens and pans are not stored in the RV when we are not traveling. I bring them inside the house for storage. I'll load them back into the RV during trip prep. After use I clean them and re-season with lard or other low/no salt oil. Never olive oil which has a high salt content depending on the brand.

RE: Homeless Cat -- Now Spotacus' Legacy

Sorry to hear about Leoghaire. Sad when she has become such a fixture in your thread. I see you're using the incremental approach to cat introductions. Those take time but they're worth it. Czarny just wants her to know he's the alpha of alphas. He's trying to impress the girl. It's a guy thing.:B

RE: Goodbye old friend, You will be missed

You have my sympathies. It's always difficult when we lose a family member. With time, perhaps you will open your heart to another who can continue Abby's legacy.

RE: Rusty grille - How to avoid

I was having this problem with my smoker I use maybe twice a year. Its grill is flat expanded metal, not even cast iron. I've been covering the grill with an old bath towel soaked in cheap $ store vegetable oil for several years. Problem solved. And yep, that old bath towel smells horrible, but no rust. With the price of brisket these days I don't know when I'll use that smoker again. Double ditto. I don't use olive oil as it has salts in it that cause rust. Cheap vegetable oil or lard with no salt is advised.

RE: Homeless Cat -- Now Spotacus' Legacy

Nothing like some excitement around the old home place, eh? Knowing what good cat parents you are, I am confident you will solve their challenges nicely. Thank you for taking Harley in.

RE: Bacon Wrapped Onion Bombs

Right tool for the job note: The cook in the video used what looked like a coring tool for fruit to hollow out the onion. I used a classic grapefruit knife (with the bent tip and both sides serrated). It went much faster than the method in the video.

Bacon Wrapped Onion Bombs

Have been looking for new ideas for bacon themed meals. Found this one and made it on Friday (without the mushrooms - didn't have any). It's a keeper.

RE: Late Snowbirding/ full timing

A good many of us use Allstays Campgrounds since it's the most complete listing. If you click on the quote marks next to the name of a state it will produce a zoomable state map where you can identify those campgrounds in the area that you want to stay.

RE: Camping north Atlanta

Allstays lists all campgrounds. Personally I would look for a state park but you might want something closer to the interstates. I don't know which route you're taking so I'll just post a link to the map of the campgrounds in Georgia listed by Allstays. You can zoom in to see the locations better. Bannock: The Original Camping Bread

I'm sure this isn't the original recipe but is designed to be portable. We tried it with our grands a few years ago and they loved wrapping the dough around the ends of sticks and cooking it over the flames. Fun times. Bannock: The Original Camping Bread

RE: RV Manners Matter

RV Manners start by following the rules & policies posted to every campground/Rv park, maybe we all can work to set a better example. :C Mike Yes, they do start with following the rules posted. But not all common-sense manners are posted to the rules. In all the decades I've been RVing I've never seen it mentioned in the rules that you shouldn't pester people to trade camp-sites.
