RE: Cleaning out black tank for winter

I take a 7 gallon tote for drinking water, ice and coffee. Way more than I need. When I leave campground I dump. After dumping I pour whatever is left from the 7 gallon tote into the toilet for the drive home. Once home, drain that. Do backflush until water comes out clear, then fill black/gray tanks 100% and let sit for at least 48 hours. I also add Tank Blaster for the 48 hour soak. People Tank Blast is a waste of money. It is cheap. $9 bucks for 4 treatments. If I can afford and TT I can handle $9. And my tank sensors have been reliable for me.

RE: Books for first time RV owners?

"RVing for Dummies" sounds insulting, but it is really a good starter. After seeing some of the questions posted here and elsewhere I think the title is fitting.

RE: Are other drivers killing your RV experience?

What find amusing, in city & towns people pass you like there hair is on fire, next red light you pull up beside them , or on the interstate people pass you do 20 over the speed limit, about one hour later they pass you again, I have had the same car or truck pass me 2 or 3 times in a day of driving! I see this a lot as well. My observation is they slow WAY down at times because they are messing with their phones.

RE: Are other drivers killing your RV experience?

Yes! We actually cancelled our trip from PA to Myrtle Beach SC because at 65 years old driving around the Baltimore and Washington outer loops scares me stiff. I know what its like just driving my 8,000 dually, they play with me like I'm a toy. Don't they respect size and mass? Pulling a 41' fifth wheel with a dually 4x4 8' bed is Xanax time, I can't stop this train on a dime! I try to maintain safe following distance to give me some room to stop......forget it. Three cars cut in front of me. I guess if I leave at midnight is best, shouldn't be too crazy at 2-4 am? Depending on where you are in PA you may want to consider getting of I-95 and going along the coast. Takes longer but it so much more calmer and enjoyable. When heading north on I-95 from SC I get off very soon after hitting the NC state line and head to the coast.

RE: Strom Thurmond Lake & Hartwell Lake GA/SC

I have stayed at Twin Lakes near Clemson, SC a couple times and was real happy with it. It does have a boat ramp. You would need to contact them in regards to where you would park the boat.

RE: One night stays and black/grey tanks

Why not as you are getting ready to leave fill your tanks completely and then dump. Won't take that long to fill. You can put a hose in the toilet to fill the black tank faster.

RE: Are the campgrounds full in your area?

Just spent 2 hours calling cgs in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville and Smokies Natl Park. Of the over a dozen that I called none had a site available for 3 consecutive nites in October with several saying no sites until mid November This is a popular area and you will need to book a year in advance, COVID-19 or not. My wife and I are already discussing will we will go in Oct of 2021 so we can go ahead and book it.

RE: first time out

what do you use to test the power? At the very least with a voltmeter check volts and polarity. Volts are where and what they should be and not where they shouldn't be.

RE: Did I ruin my water heater, please help!

There is a lot of stuff running your battery down even when everything is off. Rather plug in the camper to keep the battery charged or disconnect it to keep it from going dead. Thanks, learned something else today, it does have a battery disconnect plug, I'll just do that between trips. The battery disconnect switch disconnects most everything from the battery, but not everything. If you will not be plugged in more than a few days then remove the battery ground cable to cut off everything. Or add a new disconnect at the battery itself to make full disconnect easier. Else the battery will discharge. I would not suggest doing either of those unless you have a guaranteed way to remember it's disconnected. If you take off down the road with the battery cable disconnected or a switch there you will not have a battery in the system which is required for emergency breakaway. The factory disconnect should leave the brakes intact. During orientation when I got the camper, the guy recommended using the battery disconnect before the off season only (winter). He said the battery should keep charged during the camping season as long as I make sure the 2 fridges (indoor and outdoor) and lights are turned off, which they were, so I'm not sure what is draining my battery. Carbon monoxide detector are good at running batteries down.

RE: How often and how to clean black tank

I take a 5 gallon water tote that I use for coffee, ice and drinking water. At end of trip when I dump whatever is left in toe is dumped into toilet for swishing as I drive home. That is drained, run water thru flush system for a few minutes. Black and Grey tanks with water adding Tank Blaster which is cheap on Amazon. It works for me. I will let they sit for at least 24 hours and then dump. Water ends up coming out clean. I also park RV where I can dump in this manner.

Travelling with Bathroom Fan Running

I have read somewhere that people will crack open their bathroom fan vent a little as they travel to keep the inside of the camper cooler. Any thoughts on this and putting the fan on low?

RE: GPS recommendations

I use TomTom on my phone. I use to use TomTom devices and like the interface. Maps download to your device so losing cell service isn't an issue. If you wanted a nice big screen you could use a tablet. Annual subscription fee which to me is worth it.

RE: 4 Kids - Quad Bunk with Ford Expedition?

Yep, totally different times for sure... When I was all of those ages (yes, back in late 60's- 70's) we just pitched a couple of tents! :) My parents stuffed 7 kids in a single tent, with cots. They slept in a separate tent. Took two vehicles to get to campground. Dad drove the station wagon with 6 kids and Mom and oldest brother drove a VW Buss with all the gear. As kids went off to college and such my Dad would rent a U-Haul trailer pack everything in and it became a pantry/closet while there. GREAT TIMES.

Lake Wateree State Park, SC

They recently added a new campground with full hookups. It is less than a 30 min drive for us and we have not been since the lates 90s. So we checked it out. They clear cut the trees in the new camp ground. Couldn't believe it. State Park clearing all the trees. Sites packed in pretty tight as well. The original campground is beautiful.

RE: Pet Peeves long road trip

I have been the one on the ramp and will back off on acceleration to allow car on interstate to pass me by so I could then come in behind them. The more I slowed down to allow them to get ahead, the more they slowed down. They have the right of way, keep going. Some people have slowed down to the 30s. Funny thing, in many cases, no one behind them. If they had kept their speed up and would have adjusted and zipped right behind them. Here in SC they realize people suck zipper merges and have included a section on it in the drivers manual, not that that will help. They had sections about stop signs and stop lights as well....

RE: Are RV sewer hose supports necessary?

I only empty when tanks are full without any supports. When the grey is basically done I left the hose near the camper and work my way to the sewer connection to get what is left out. Whole lot easier and quicker than messing with the supports.
