RE: Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

flyte63....I checked in on your blog spot....very interesting. It never fails to amaze me how inovative and talented the Avion onwers on this site are....It makes me shudder just to read some of the tasks that are accomplished...I hope I wont have to do a floor replacement on My C10... I would say good luck with the rest of the renovation...however i dont think you depend on luck :-) Maybe one day we can still all plan to meet up in Telingua.. rasta

Howdy! If y’all are going to Terlingua (when we can), why not go to the Big Chili Cookoff? How does one enter? I think it is in november, and from what I hear from the locals, it is an occasion to avoid. I think I am a little too old for that type of partying :-) Its getting pretty hot out there now,,,I think the next window of opportunity for me and decent weather is going to be in September.

67...I am thinking somewhere in the middle to end of April..Things are a little hectic for me right now however that is my target time. I am hoping to be in the area (SW Texas/Arizona) for a few weeks, lets see what works for everyone.

D1trout....My target date is late April. That is the time we usually go out there, as the weather is 'usually' good...nice day time temps and chilly at nights, and sometimes windy. although that is always subject to change. There are a couple of things that may affect that timing, but I am hoping not. Early May is good too as that is when they have "Voices across the river" which we attended last year and are hoping to do the same this year...If all goes well we hope to spend weeks out there, so.....

On the contary my friend, the blantant display of the Avions flexability and unique arrangement will put it in a class by itself. However I am coming prepared with wrist bands and gold colored rope and poles so I can have a restricted area roped off to facilitate crown control.

All good ideas fellows, however I really do think we need to charge a fee. We could have several teirs. Basic would be to just look, next level would be to touch and pet. Then the preium would be to actually enter the interior and have their picture taken.

We were in Big Bend after a stay in Marfa several years ago. It was around Thanksgiving. Made a TR as the snow flew at Cottonwood Campground along the Rio Grande. This venture will be epic. From Carbondelay (©) Illinois to La Rasta Terlingua to Muley Point. Not for the faint of heart! No doubt...however I would argue that owners of Avion's have already shown their courage. This trip will just underscore our unquestionable bravery, and will be one for the records. LOL cheers

“Just in time for Muley Point” - I like that positive attitude! I’d hope you could come to Terlingua as well. The Chihuahuan desert in the spring is exceptionally beautiful - lots of wildflowers, blooming cactus and ocotillo, streams and waterfalls running. Not to be missed! Onward! Yeh Mon ....That's what I am talking about, although I have yet to see the waterfalls ;-0 one Love

Howdy! Glad to see everyone is back! Now when and where is this Avionista Fiasco taking place? Cajunavion...good to hear from you... The when for the Fiasco is set in jello..we are thinking sometime in the month of April...the where is in Terlingua Ranch, in the Big Bend State Park Area. The Fiasco will begin on my property which is totally off grid, From there we will be at the mercy of our fearless leader 67avion who will lead the caravan to Mulley Point.. and who knows where else. Hoping you can make it.... rasta

RE: Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

To further explain...The bottom layer of ply (what ever thickness it was), combined with the rough cut (true 1" cedar boards) gave me the desired thickness. The ply really didn't provide much support. The support comes from the boards that fit into/under the horizontal C channel. and was attached like the original, just that now instead of screwing into whatever they used I was now going into solid 1" boards and ply that were formed to fit the horizontal and vertical curvatures, sandwiched between the framing and skin. I added L brackets on the side of the vertical rails for good measure. I also used a few metal roofing screws with rubber washers, screwing from below outside through the skin to attach the ply to the 12" boards. That secured the ply. The entire support comes from the boards, resting on the bulkhead at one end, running north to south and attached to the support aluminium frame along the side and in front. I used ( 4) 12" boards 1 on each side and 2 spaced in the middle. then 1' foam board to fill in the gaps between the boards then covered with ply cut to shape. The upper ply if I recall is not attached, its not going anywhere, i can then lift it to inspect for moisture. At the time I did not have a design as such, it just kind of fell into place, I did't take any pictures really just a couple of the completed area. The key is to get that curvature just right, so that the boards..whatever you use goes all the way in to meet the outside skin, which provides a thicker area of the board where you will have to screw into. You will have to form the side of the outer boards as well as the front corner and curve. hope this help...I will be happy to PM anyone who wants to see pics. No problem mon

RE: Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

67avion.....I replaced my entire cab over flooring during my rebuild, I remember having to 'trim' the boards to fit that curved area. It was a layer of 1/2" ply cut to the exact shape of the cab over.( I might of had to use two pieces to get it in) that were sealed around the edges with penetrating sealer then the entire board coated, with epoxy. That formed the lower base. Above that was placed 4 runs of 1" x 12" rough cut ceder boars cut to length, Those had to be cut and sanded to shape to wedge in tight to that curved area. (giving the desired 3/4' thickness). Those gave support and something to screw into. I then screwed through the horizontal rail into the cedar around the perimeter and also used some L brackets where the over head vertical ribs met the boards...turned out pretty strong. I did all this from inside without removing the lower skin. In between the runs of 12' boards I place 1" foam board..then a top layer of 1/2' ply was added. I will send you a picture, (it will be easier to grasp) sorry... I still have not been able to post one here :-(

The Tequila (or rum ) in Terlingua sounds great to me, As my C10 (affectionately called Armadillo) really needs to be seen to appreciate it's 'carried' functionality. And I for one will have to see Argo..they say, seeing is believing, and I want to believe that beauty. Oh....Grand River will be welcome too..;) Lets do this rasta

RE: Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

Rastaman.. for what it’s worth I was at a Tin Can Tourists vintage rally last week and there was a truck camper there that was permanently on a trailer similar to yours. It was well received by all and the unique functional advantages over a typical travel trailer we’re appreciated. Thanks flyte63....Makes me feel not so isolated and I can attest to the functional advantages, which includes being able to carry my motorcycle. I am a firm believer in 'function over form' yeh Mon
