Interesting and shows what can be done if you are willing to pay for it. However, my idea of Boonedocking involves a canoe and tent. Oh to be young again. :)

My experience with CW had been good. They have what they advertise. However, are not the cheapest option. I usually shop Amazon or eBay but when I want to touch a product I go to the store. It is the same with Cabelas, it cost more but they have it.

RE: what surface to store tt on?

I pull up on on two 6 ft. 2x12s. Our yard is mostly grass on sand, the boards keep the tires from settling into the sand. More importantly, my yard is very shady so sun damage is not an issue. We keep the tire pressure up and do a fair number of outings so flat spots have not been an issue.

Here are some real world figures. * 2011 F-150 Max Cargo from door jamb 1411#. * 2010 Dutchmen Lite 25 ft. TT. Dry weight 5004#. Loaded for the road and across the CAT scales the TT weighs 6200# with about 750# on the tongue. * That is about 12% on the tongue, the WD hitch is set a touch nose down. The wife and I plus the dog and camp gear come to about 650#. This puts the truck at its limit. We have no issues towing, the E-boost pulls nicely and we have managed 40,000 mile in about 5 years. Our trailer weight actually varies with the amount of "stuff" we need from trip to trip. Water, consumables, and gear can vary 200 to 300 lbs.; even more on weekend outings. We love the rig combo but anything heavier would require a larger truck. Towing at the limit does take a toll on shocks, brakes and tires. Of course not everyone is gong to tow 8000 mile a year across desert and the Rockies. Good Luck

My question is how many joules are needed? I suspect if lightning strikes near enough to put an impulse on the line, your surge is toast with the rest of your gear. However, crossed wiring is a problem I have run into.

Quite frankly I have never found trailer movement to be an issue. I set the chocks as needed for the slope of the ground and that is that. Perhaps it has never been an issue because I have a shorter 25 ft. 6500 # TT. Even my worst case in KY where I had the tongue 30" off the ground and the back bumper off the ground by mere inches caused no TT movement. I have driven over my chocks a few times but those cheapo yellow plastic types pop back after a few days.

The first thing I would do is check the water heater spec if I didn't trust the person sales person. Mine is gas/electric, it runs about 20 minutes in the morning on either and we are set till we do dishes. With just two of us, it is maybe on e a day. Since we pay for electric, that is what I prefer to use.

RE: Brakes sticking

After a road hazard had broken a spring, put a baseball sized dent in the tire rim, and damaged both axels. The Insurance company decided it would be cheaper to replace the entire undercarriage. A two and a half weeks wait and the new Lippert undercarriage was bolted to the frame and the TT was in my back yard. Since then we have I have towed about 5000 miles but on our last trip in November I noticed a slight grabbing it the brakes. I had forgotten about it until we decided to do a Valentine's day trip. As I mentioned starting cold there is no issues for the first 15 to 20 miles then the brake started to grab. If it is an adjustment issue I will do that when the weather warms a bit and I can pull the rim to pack the bearings. I have a Tekonsha inertia type controller which I have used in my last two TV's. It is about 12 years old.

Brakes sticking

About two years ago I had a new undercarriage installed due to a nasty road hazard. At the end of last season I notices that as I applied the brake, the TT slow then it seems like one of the brakes shoes would stick. Last week we decided to dry camp in the snow at the State Park. Both coming and going in 25 degree weather. After about 15 of 20 miles, when I would apply the brake, no matter how light I set the controller, the trailer would start to slow then a brake would seem to stick and this sent a jerk though the TV. It has been to cold to tear into the brake so I wondered if anyone else has had this problem. I only have about 5000K on these brakes.

Across the CAT scales I had about 700 lbs. of tongue weight so about 750 lbs. of max cargo capacity left. Suddenly, two adults, a big dog, a fiberglass cap, tools, bikes and camp gear eat that up quite quickly. It all sneaks up on you.

I have a 2010 vintage "Lite" TT. The manufacturer said I needed to place plywood boards down before I could walk on my roof. With my fear of heights, it has not been an issue. :)

With the TT industry putting about 2 million tires on the road each year, it will be a a long long time before the Endurance sales supply comparable failure rate data. Plus those who care enough to upgrade their tires are also more attuned to tire maintenance.

One could also asked, why is it wrong to use the trailer industry standard ST tires, that finds service in everything from horse trailers, mobile dumpsters, grain wagons, utility trailers, in addition to the 2 million TT tire every year; yet settle for the latest LT tire on sale at the Discount Tire store, rather than a top of the line, Michelin? We buy what we feel confident will do the job. If you are more confident in an LT over an ST. There is absolutely no reason to stay with the industry standard.

Reason has left this discussion a long time ago. If you do not like ST tires or you like LTs, GY or whatever your bias, buy what you want. Nobody is going to give you a metal, pay for your choice and it will not go on you permanent record from high school. If it feels good, do it. It is a personal choice. The TT and other trailer makers are not going to change.

My valve is conveniently located under the TT above the rear axle next to the low point drain pipes. You can just barely reach it if you squeeze under the steps.:)

RE: I shopped for a new TT today

It has been my observation that if you go in looking for poor quality and craftsmanship in an RV you will find it. But for some reason when you find the unit you really like, it seems a cut above the rest. So to the so called poor designs, a slide that blocks the bath or kitchen or bedroom when it is in; these are the result of giving the customer the other features they want in the floor plan. I would not buy it but it is of little significance to those who do. If you want it, someone will build it. If you want it at a price you can afford, then the options are a bit more limited.

RE: 4 season camping

Living in and camping, are to different objectives for an RV. We take our 2010 Dutchmen out to the State Parks in winter. We shut the water down and use the park's heated wash house. During the day when we are outside, the TT is typically abounds 50 degrees or so with a small electric space heater. In the evening we warm it up till bed time. Cooking is done with a water jug from home, dishes wait till we get home. A four season TT with heated tanks would be nice for sure but most anyone can handle a day or two of roughing it. Now if you plan to stay in it for any length of time, that is a completely different story.

Anytime I travel out West I fill up before I leave town. I also carry an extra five gallons of gas, in case I run out. At 10 mpg or less towing, I leave as little as possible to luck. I agree, late August early September has been about the best for our canoe trips in northern MN.
