RE: Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

Hi all! It's been a while since I've checked in so I'm playing catch up. Glad to see some new members. Cant wait to see how your builds go! Questions. Matching aluminum, what's good or the best. Can the best be found 5ft wide? or I've read 2024 4' wide, but I recall that as bright. Any treatments to match, or will it need to be shined up to match? Matching is a little complicated because the aluminum does seem to change a bit based on sun exposure. We have found that the sheet that we ordered for patching and other work matches very well, though it is a little noticeable at certain angles. That said: when we removed the roof sealant that a previous owner had applied, we found that that aluminum was a near perfect match to our new material. So, a bit of weathering and it should all match up. I did go into detail on what we ordered and why in a blog post if anyone is interested. It's easier than trying the embed pictures in the forum:

By way found a pretty good match for our front window. It's the molded double panned acrylic with much better seal and insulation. Just put it in a month ago. Here's the details. We are also in the search for similar replacement windows for the side. Closest we've found is one with a 5000 mm radius of circumference. Looks like our avion needs a more pronounced curve (especially at the top). Back of the envelope calculation, it looks like a 3600 mm radius of circumference might work. Has anybody found a good modern window match for the sides?

Thanks for the complement D1trout. We were very inspired watching your Argo build and the many discussions around it. We found this forum soon after we bought our Avion and it has been an amazing resource. Kudos to whoever it was that posted the first pictures of their interior stripped down the bare aluminum walls. I don't think we would have dared had we not had a map of what to expect!

We also rebuilt our cab over using a fiberglass composite material. We bought new aluminum and epoxied it right to the bottom of the cab over bed (in addition to the wings and sides). Replaced the bottom screws with 314 stainless steel. It's been very solid even after extending it to accommodate north-south sleeping and doing some pretty rough roads (we just did the Rimrocker trail over the summer). You can see some of the details here.
