RE: Leaving potable antifreeze in the system

If you haven't diluted it or used it then no, the antifreeze should be fine for another winter.

RE: Need Suspension Mods

I have a Northstar Igloo on a 2013 F350 CCLB SRW and I added Sumosprings and Torklift upper stable loads. That seems to work for the suspension and to get rid of some sway I am adding a BigWig swaybar, replacing the wimpy OEM swaybar, next week when I have a moment. I'm sure your rig is heavier than mine so an additional leaf in your spring pack might be in order. Can't really tell you what to do, just what has worked for me.

RE: Back order shocks

I have Bilstein 5100 on my Ford F350 and have been very pleased. Roughly 60,000 miles on them and they are still going strong.

RE: Mattress Underlayment

We use the froli system and have been very pleased but I can’t compare it to anything else because we added it on day one. Never an issue with condensation even in below freezing weather.

RE: Is it safe to use truck camper on jack stands

Not an issue. We do it whenever we are going to be in one place for more than a few days.

RE: Battery Drain Help Please

Not sure about the 2005 but my 2013 F350 diesel has a battery disconnect built in. There is a parasitic drain on the truck battery from things like clocks and other electronics but that shouldn't be an issue in 3 months time. I assume you have two batteries since it is a diesel. I keep my truck on a battery tender because it is often months between trips. Disconnect the battery terminal and measure the current draw with a meter. That will give you some idea of how large a drain there is. That is where I would start my trouble shooting. If there any significant drain something is amiss somewhere.

RE: New to Truck Camping

You aren't missing anything. Truck manufacturers are required to state a maximum weight (in my case, diesel F350 SRW a gvwr 11,500). My truck weighs 8400 pounds so I have 3100 carrying capacity. I had to look long and hard at campers that I was comfortable with and ended up with a hard side Northstar Igloo 9.5. It weighs 2900 pounds with water and propane. Add another 500 pounds +/- for my "stuff" and I am 300-400 pounds over my GVWR and carrying capacity but under both front and rear axle ratings. I am comfortable at this level. Others are more adventuresome and go heavier. Tires are the weak element and I am also under my tire carrying capacity. A single rear wheel vehicle rules out most slideout campers at least for me. We are very happy with our hardside but others want more room and need (want) slides. The bigger you go, the more you need to think DRW instead of SRW. No matter how much you modify the truck to handle the weight you won't change the stickers. But lots of folks will go to 19.5" wheels, better tires and upgrade the suspension to carry heavier rigs. Shop around, go to Truck Camper Magazine for tips on matching trucks and campers and then go with the amount of "risk" you are comfortable with. And I am not the weight police, I just know what I am comfortable with. Welcome to our world.

RE: Brands That Can Be Used Off The Truck

Just about all newer TCs can be used off the truck - Northstar, Northern Lite, Lance, Bigfoot, Cirrus, etc can all be used off the truck.

RE: Help with delamination problem

If nothing else, I would send the photos to Rex at Northstar and ask for his opinion. They have great customer service and I expect Rex would be dismayed to see this damage. I have a 2017 Igloo and haven't had any issues with mine but this is certainly a heads up to keep an eye on things.

RE: Shock Absorbers

I swapped out the stock Ford shocks for Bilstein 5100's. Been pleased with them. Have about 50,000 miles on them with the camper and no issues so far.

RE: Putting camper on gravel

Not sure that either option makes a lot of difference. As long as you have adequate pads under the jacks to spread the weight out you should be fine. I'd go with the more convenient option on the gravel. Not sure about support under your camper, that's your call. We just lower our rig down when it is off the truck and have never tried to support it with saw horses. The jacks are made to take the weight and we have had our camper stored on grass, mud and gravel. As long as we have used jack pads we have never had an issue.

RE: As to camper weight, what does this sticker indicate?

This sticker doesn't tell you anything about camper weight. You know what Ford says the GVWR and GAWR for the truck are but until you know the truck's weight you have no idea what the carrying capacity is. And on top of that you need to factor in your own risk tolerance since with a 10,000 pound GVWR many campers will put you over the GVWR. Get your truck to a scale with and without the load you plan to carry and then you'll have data with which to make decisions.

RE: Bed Mat

I have the same mat in my F350. Works great and is a perfect fit. Much lighter than stall mats. My Igloo rides on it just fine. Good choice.

RE: Torklift Talons

We have the Talons in salt country here in VT and I am very pleased with them. No issues with corrosion so far and I inspect them very carefully after every trip because I have heard some rumors about weld issues. So far I have no weld issues, no corrosion and they are much lighter than the steel. Been in the salt here now for 4 years and 30,000 miles across the US, Canada and Alaska and the Yukon.

RE: How do you get to your spare tire with the camper on?

Not sure what you have for a camper but with my Northstar Igloo I can drop the spare with the camper on the truck no problem. I have tried just to make sure. The Igloo doesn't hang low enough to interfere with the access hole for the spare.

RE: Registration Rant

$287 annually for me here in Vermont. I am registered for 12,500 and we pay based on weight.

RE: Mopeka Products

Been using them for 4 years with no issues. Support has been excellent. Originals came with the rubber feet but they sent me upgraded metal feet that have worked very well. Battery life is about 6 months but not an issue for me since it is a bluetooth transmitter so you have to expect the batteries will run down. They do seem to be quite accurate based on my pattern of refills.

RE: TC off truck

We sleep in our Northstar off the truck without any issues. Just lower it down and you will have no issues.
