RE: Do pass-through windows leak?

Our Northstar Igloo has never leaked even in torrential downpours. Sounds more like cost cutting to me but watch, the price won't drop.

RE: Why SRW off road?

Bighatnohorse has covered two of the most common reasons. The narrower profile of a SRW will simply allow you to get to more remote places where the roads are very narrow and where canting the truck will place more stress on the camper and truck, especially with high COG campers. And rocks between tires can lead to flats. Duallys are certainly more stable and have greater carrying capacity but so far I have been happy with my SRW for the last 60,000 miles.

RE: Torklift tie down maintenance

POR will work over rust. Clean them up best you can and then a couple of coats of POR.

RE: Another noobie question.

Propane on when traveling. I don’t have 12 volt fridge so it is either propane or shore power. Since we have a diesel truck no issue with fumes.

RE: Roadside Assistance

We have roadside as part of our USAA policy and I also have a progressive policy on my TC so it is covered both on and off the truck. I have never used roadside and I have had it with several different providers so I can't comment on how good it is. Most I would probably need it for is a flat tire and I can change that myself. If the motor blows up I'll have bigger issues than assistance. :-)

RE: When to throw in the towel...

Camping in the record heat we are seeing on east and west coasts is no walk in the park. While the AC can cool the camper, it is loud and makes sleeping a chore. And you need shore power or a generator to run it. You made the right choice.

RE: Hershey RV show

We went several years ago and there were a few TC dealers there but not a huge selection. Your best bet is to find a dealer specializing in TC's and who carries a variety of MFGs. Truck Camper Warehouse in NH is a good example. Check their website and you'll get some sense of what a good dealer carries.

RE: License plates

Half the time I leave the plate on the truck, the other half on the camper. If I'm on a long haul for months I'll stick it on the camper. For short trips I usually leave it on the truck. The good news is, either way the plate is pretty easily visible from behind because the Igloo sits high enough to allow you to see it on the truck.

RE: I had an osh-t moment and now looking for replacement

You said no more than one slide so I'll suggest no slide Northstar.

RE: truck camper manufacturer in Quebec

For +$135,000 I'll stick with my Northstar.

RE: satellite radio and gps antenna

I bought a second antenna and mounted it on the plastic cowl in front of the windshield. It is still occasionally blocked by the camper but far less frequently. It's an easy fix and the plug under the dash by the driver's left foot is easy to swap back and forth when the camper is on or off the truck. The antenna on the roof is in the best location but the alternate location has worked well for me.

RE: Need advice on my first camper truck

Look for a 350/3500 series, SRW, 4x4, with gas engine and 6 speed transmission. Agreed. Best to have a 350/3500 SRW or DRW truck. Gas is fine. If you can afford a newer truck the ten speed trannies are the cats meow. If the truck has been prepped for plowing with the heavy duty front end that's a plus but not critical. Good hunting.

RE: What do you guys use for communication in your truck camper?

Garmin InReach. Has worked from the wilds of Alaska, the Yukon, the back woods of Maine and everywhere in between. Subscription is cheap insurance.

RE: Truck Registration Weight

Don't know about NY but here in VT it costs me about $100 more per year to register at 12,500 instead of my sticker GVWR of 11,500. Outside of that there hasn't been any issue and I can afford the $100 to stay under my actual weight on my registration. No license changes, no insurance issues, no special plate issues. But that is VT, NY may be different.
