RE: Loading/unloading on uneven ground

I have the same issue with close tolerances and have taken the camper off on uneven ground a couple of times. Unloading isn't an issue but getting loaded back up can be a ***** (at least my experience). Matching the slope of the truck to the camper on uneven ground can be a real challenge and cause fear and frustration. My advice is don't unless you have absolutely no other choice.

Take a look at Northstar Campers. Double pane windows, well insulated, cassette toilets and they will custom build (within reason) for your needs. We have an Igloo on an F350 and have camped in 0 and below without issue. We do have solar and two group 27 batteries that will carry us through the night with the furnace. Other than Cirrus I'm not aware of anyone else using the Alde system. Wish it came as an option for my rig but it isn't a deal breaker. Other cold weather rigs are Artic Fox, Northern Lite and Bigfoot. Probably others I haven't remembered.Only you can decide what is best for you so make it a point to go visit someone that can show you as many as possible. Good luck.

Sidecar, not all of us have access to inside storage but I have found with proper maintenance your camper won't suffer being outside. My 5th wheel is a 2006 with a rubber (not TPO) roof, never been covered, and is still holding up fine. But I am on the roof every spring and every fall looking for any areas or seams that need attention. Sure it would be nice to park inside out of the snow, rain and ice but it isn't in the cards. So I'll plan to make the trip up on the roof every year until we decide to sell. So far that had worked for me.

Our dogs go back and forth through the window and in a pinch I probably could but it would be a struggle - the power sliding window on the truck doesn't provide a lot of room to slip through.

RE: Northstar Arrow U

No experience with the Arrow U but we have the big brother, the Igloo U. Well made, great company and service (if needed) and a wonderfull cold weather rig. Ours has been to Alaska and back, Canada, the Yukon, BC, Florida, all up and down the east coast. It has been bullet proof. Well designed and every nook and cranny has been thought out to make the best use of space. And the cassette toilet is the best thing since sliced bread.

RE: Any reason to unload when not using TC?

We store our camper legs up. The truck suspension doesn't have any issues with the weight and we don't have airbags so can't comment on air pressures.

Sounds like no need to take it off the truck since you are towing a car. You should practice taking it off and on but that can wait until you have a nice open level spot to practice and are under no need to rush. People have different sensitivity to rocking. When we have our camper off the truck we don't find any objectionable movement. Others may have different sensitivities. I suggest that when you are able to have it off the truck, try it out and see if you are bothered by any movement you might experience.

RE: TC / airbag suspension

We have an F350 with a Northstar Igloo, 3600-3800 pounds wet. I have upper stable loads and Sumo Springs. I purposely chose not to go with airbags. No issues at all with wind or sway and we have been on some pretty wild roads in Alaska and in a lot of wind going across the USA. My preference is to eliminate as many points of failure as possible and since airbags require pumps, hoses and fittings I chose to avoid any potential issue with those items on my rig. Others will surely chime in with experience with air bags who have never had an issue and swear by them. I'd say it is a decision you will have to make accounting for where you want to go, what your risk tolerance is and how well your truck handles whatever camper you want to load on it. You will get an equal number of "I love air bags" and "I don't use them".

RE: 2020 Ford F350 - XLT or Lariat / options guidance?

I haven't seen an order sheet for the 2020 Fords but in general you will probably be stuck with packages that offer some of what you want and some things you don't. We have a Lariat I custom ordered in 2013 and the packages were less obnoxious then - I got mostly what I wanted and not much I didn't want. The Lariat option was great then, no idea where it will take you on the 2020. You'll want the fogs and LED headlights, the camper and tow packages. The heated and cooled seats are wonderful. The Ford navigation and radio software isn't worth the money but if you want to synch your phones you either buy their stuff or try to find an aftermarket solution that may or may not work. And maybe they will get smart in 2020 and include Apple and Android connections, who knows. Love my F350. Good luck with the purchase - oh, the e-locker works great, factory tires suck and the 3.55 rear end is all you need if you get the diesel. For what you are considering I'd look at the new gas jobs and save the big bucks the diesel costs unless you are going to tow heavy.

Not knowing much about TC's this setup looks like it should be std on all TC's. The 4 skinny legs just look like they would be wobbly if you try to use the camper unmounted to the truck. Those that take the camper off do you need any other support other than the 4 skinny legs to make it more stable? The so called skinny legs hold the TC just fine. If we are going to be in one place for more than a few days we dismount the camper and lower it down. Contrary to the way things look, the legs are very stable and the camper will not tip over on its nose.

RE: FW capacity

We have a Northstar Igloo and we have 40 gallons of fresh water. What really makes that work for us is the cassette toilet, which has its own 5 gallon water supply and that can be used with very little water. We also carry jugs for drinking water and mostly use the FW thank for showers and dish washing. It's amazing how little water you can get along with if you try.
