In 2020 the TFL guys did the Ike with a 7.3 10sp. with 4:30 gearing. They used large living quarters horse trailer loaded to 16k. On the downhill it took 9 brake applications to hold their 50-60 test. On the uphill it did it in 8:47 secs which is close to perfect 60 mph constant. Trucks fuel meter said 2.2 mpg during the climb. Same setup with GM 6.6 6 sp. did 10 brake and uphill was over 11 min. at 2.3 mpg. Just an fyi.

@benny37, I have to laugh. I understand fully what body panel alignment is as well. The funny part is while I’ve never driven a Tesla, you can’t swing a dead cat around here without hitting (seeing) one. I have never once looked at one and thought, ugh that door gap is something only a mother could love…. Idk, pretty weak argument imo. Coming from someone like me who’s decidedly pro dead dinosaurs vehicles, if one has to say stupid things to try to support their decision or argument, it’s time to pick another fight…. Grit agreed, I live in Tesla heaven, CA Wine Country. On a daily basis I see more of them now than say Camrys. In my neighborhood of 220 homes there are at least a dozen now 80% Model Ys. There is a 12 stall Supercharger in the shopping center right outside the entrance to our development. Average 4 cars there at a time. There is no towing accessible stall so that will be entertaining when it comes about. I can’t recall ever seeing a Tesla towing anything around here though. Being a manual wheelchair user I thought it was cool they have an Accessible stall. The bummer is I have never seen a more cheated spot. I was 40 year Maintenance Tech on Bizjets so I have a good eye for detail and I think the panel gap deal is over blown. Maybe early on. I will say the only Tesla I’ve ever seen on a tow truck was Model X with one of the Falcon doors half open.

Respectfully, the Greeks built the Parthenon. Thanks, my bad. Meant Pantheon. All the more amazing since it has a concrete dome. With no reinforcing steel. Agreed, there’s multiple engineering feats we can’t match today.

Not sure what NG pipelines are made of but there’s the issue of Hydrogen Embrittlement. Per Wikipedia; Hydrogen embrittlement (HE), also known as hydrogen-assisted cracking or hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC), is a reduction in the ductility of a metal due to absorbed hydrogen. Hydrogen atoms are small and can permeate solid metals. Once absorbed, hydrogen lowers the stress required for cracks in the metal to initiate and propagate, resulting in embrittlement. Hydrogen embrittlement occurs most notably in steels, as well as in iron, nickel, titanium, cobalt, and their alloys. Copper, aluminium, and stainless steels are less susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement.

My son and I drove Anchorage to NorCal in Dec 2006 and had no issues. We just didn’t pass an open station once we hit half tank or judging distance to next town. That being said most off the outpost stations were closed or daytime hours only.

I think you just need to look at Tesla themselves. In 2018 Elon stated that GF Reno would be off grid in 2019. They have only added several sections of panels to the roof not nearly what would be required. I believe it would be startling to see the area of panels and number of Megapacks to make it work. He has also built 3 factories since with minimal renewable power capacity. There has to be a reason other than cost as they make all the equipment. Also in terms of costs to Corporations let’s not forget that they have the Investment Tax Credit to cover facility upgrades for energy efficiency. As far as equipment ie Pepsi and the Semi’s they were eligible for 100% bonus depreciation last year, this year is 80%.

Ok, sorry Time. Ah the glory of being taken out of context. What I was implying is Pepsi could have said thanks to the People of CA for the 15.1 million. I’d imagine we paid for the whole charging facilities. To me it makes it a sort of risk free project on their part and will bias the actual cost of ownership as those numbers won’t be included when they talk about it in the future. I get that the Petro industry has been getting handouts for ever. I reviewed the grant guidelines for the billions in charge network money in the recent Fed legislation. A large portion is available to private companies for onsite charging facilities.

Ok couldn’t sleep, watched both videos. I’ve driven I-5 to SoCal a lot of times. If you look at the graph Tesla provides for the trip you can see the point where it starts the climb up the Grapevine. The area at the base is named Wheeler Ridge it’s at the south end of the flat Central Valley a mile or so further starts the real climb. The top of the climb is Tejon pass at 4136 ft as they say. Beyond it a mile or so is the town of Gorman. It is 18 miles from Wheeler Ridge to Gorman after Gorman the road flattens for a bit before you start down. On the graph it’s at 50% charge when the elevation starts rising per Tesla. It at 32 % as it crests the pass so it used 18% to go 18 miles uphill. I think it has a 1000 kw pack it has to be at least 950 kw. So 18% of the pack is 180 kw or 10 kw a mile. No magic there. It’s interesting I ran same experiment of miles and percentage used on the leg from Tesla factory to Kettleman City and it used about 1.8 kw a mile. So under ideal weather and traffic (from the video) on level ground at 55 it seems like will do what they said. Now let’s see what Giga Factory Reno to Salt Lake City which is 502 miles per Apple Maps looks like. Iirc I-80 is 70 or 75 mph all the way. Your probably looking at Wells or Wendover max at that speed.

While it is capable of going up the Grapevine at 60, is there video of that? It would have been speeding as the towing limit in CA is 55. I’d really like to see the consumption doing it as if I understand correctly all 3 motors would be working in that situation. I’m sure it’s well under a mile per KWh then. Said it before, Pepsi is beta test. I’m sure it will do great for them as the use pattern is set for success.

As an fyi the Modesto facility of Pepsi is a Frito Lay facility. It’s the only place they installed Megachargers so far.

It’s interesting that Nikola is actually saying up to 330 mi. range using a 778 kWh pack. They also have several disclaimers about factors that can limit it. I still think 500 miles for the Semi is optimistic at best, especially after they went back to the 2170 cells. When Elon said 621 miles that was using 4680 cells. It’s going to need a 1 Meg pack at least to go 500 miles. Doesn’t Tesla say 70% in a 30 min. charge so that’s only 350 under ideal conditions.

I’ve noticed the lots filling up around here as well. Watching football I noticed a couple of the OEMs were offering finance deals and small rebates, like 1000.00. So they’re seeing the handwriting on the wall also. My friends F350 is still at the Speedway since late Aug.

A couple charging questions, Riesender, are Tesla chargers a universal rate cost wise? Or does it vary regionally. Does anybody know how things are supposed to work with all the chargers WE THE PEOPLE are installing? Are we paying for Electrify America to have a bunch of new sites? Who is supposed to manage and maintain them? Of course nobody has mentioned anything about a discount since we all paid for the facility.
