A small 15 watt solar panel will keep the chassis battery tendered. The one I bought to replace to old one works even when the Tyvek cover is on.

RE: Onan Microlite 4000 shaft locks up on occasion

Yes sir that’s a iron engine, the Onan microlite is aluminum and not made to last like that engine.
You DO realize that ALL "aluminum" engine cylinders ARE iron sleeved, right?
Onan is no exception to sleaving.
HERE is just one sample of an Onan gen engine which does state..
Engine
Engine Brand Cummins Onan
Starting System 12-Volt Button Start
HP 7 HP
Consumer Engine Warranty 2 Years
Engine RPM 3600 RPM
Cast Iron Sleeve Yes"
Basically in a nutshell, there IS a IRON cylinder sleeve that was either installed by pushing a sleeve in or using the iron sleeve as part of the aluminum molding process.
The outside of the cylinder is aluminum and finned for best heat dissipation for air cooling and less weight. Sleeved engines are used exclusively by even the automotive world in any aluminum or aluminum alloy block.
The sleeving is done so well that it is impossible to see any difference between the aluminum and the iron sleeve.
Some engines the sleeve is called a liner and is removable and replaceable, find that in big diesel engines.
The next air cooled engine you tear apart, take a magnet to the cylinder sleeve.. Bet the magnet will stick..
aka...Biral cylinder/s

RE: Onan Microlite 4000 shaft locks up on occasion

The problem is with the starter drive gear . the gear is made of a plastic/fiber material and the drive parts wear with use, then "bind up" in the flywheel-blower wheel teeth. when you reach in the air intake end and grab the flywheel fins you can usually break it free by turning it in opposite direction of normal rotation. the only fix is to replace the starter, which usually requires pulling the genset from the RV, as the enclosure cover has to be removed to access starter. There are really cheap starters available on-line, but they are really "cheap"! You get what you pay for...I would go with ONAN part; 191-2351, usually available for under $100 from Onan parts dealer.
An important reminder....
Always disconnect the battery to the generator if attempting to turn the fan with hand.

RE: What % Of Alcohol Does Your State Have?

Even worse it has already been shown that more ethanol is not better. Any amount beyond a few percent is useless in terms of cleaner burning. In fact, it has an overall lower BTU compared to straight gas IOW...lower MPGs. Most cars on the road today are not able to run E-15 without issue/s.

RE: %#[email protected]^ critters!

I've had good luck using a 5 gallon bucket with (2 holes) drilled near top of it 180 degrees of each other. Run a small stiff wire (hanger type) with a small diameter PVC tube over it so it spins freely just slightly smaller than width of bucket. Then drill some small holes in the 'center of the tube' that spins and smear peanut butter into them.
Now use a wooden yard stick and attach it to the side so mice can travel up bait it a little if you like with peanut butter.
Mice will go up and when they venture to the center of the tube it will spin dumping them in the bucket. Oh...add a few inches of water to drown the little critters. The best thing about this trap is you set it and forget about it. It catches over and over and over and over and over...
Total cost $5 bucks or so. Works indoors or outdoors. I have my sitting at the back of my RV in the storage yard where I park. Helps not only me but the other owners there as well. LOL! No poison involved.

RE: onan 5500

Indeed. It's an old WWII holdover myth that generators die from lack of use. The electronics in them today don't have the issue of those used decades ago. Yes fuel can be an issue but it takes years for that to become apparent.
I always dump an appropriate amount of STA-BIL into my fuel tank when filling up gas tank prior to storage. Then I run the generator under 50+ percent load for ~30 min. Then shut off.
Come spring time it (Micro 4K) fires right up. Been doing this for 8 years without issue.

RE: In 2 years time I can no longer afford to buy a camper

I certainly don't see a recession happening this year, either. That being said, I'm not getting a 2nd job so I'm not sure if you're talking to me or who that advice is for. I work enough as it is.Not singling anyone out. Same with this: If all the savings is in a bank savings or CD there is tremendous risk of loss due to inflation continuing. Some should be in the equity market.
No need to worry when the BIG drop comes. Not a question of if only when. We're closer than ever now.
I know people that run around and talk about the sky is falling, the sky is falling, and they don’t have any money and will never have any money because of their mindset.
That is like saying we'll never have another recession and/or depression. Don't be that guy.

No need to worry when the BIG drop comes. Not a question of if only when. We're closer than ever now.In two years time (as the OP inquired about) the SP500 has risen about 57%
That would have taken the OP or anyone else from $50,000 to have $78,500 today.
Still not much to retire on.

RE: solar powered camper up to 450 mile range

There is no EV car today who gets close to it's claimed distance driven before charge is required. Not by a long shot.
That would depend on the speed and a half dozen other factors.
The article below tests EV's at 70 mph.
The fourth line shows a 2021 Porsche which gets 30% more range than the EPA figures. 293 miles vs epa of 225.
The Ford Mustang also betters the EPA numbers as does the Ionic (but only by a nose).
https://insideevs.com/reviews/443791/ev-range-test-results/
I guess your shot is a little short? * grin *
Not at all. Both are not close to 'real world driving' scenarios. Electric has a long way to go before being truly considered a viable replacemnt for gas. We'll have cam less engines before that happens.

RE: 1998 Holiday Rambler Vacationer? 13k Is it worth it?

I bought a 94 Southwind Storm back in Sept 2014 with just shy of 45K on the OD. It is now at 71K. But I do nearly (90 percent) all my own work and have replaced a lot that I consider aging out (sensors, hoses, belts etc...) also put in a new fridge.
Picked it up for 8K and I've likely spent another 4-5K just in replacing items I know that are old (working though) rather than risk it being an issue on a trip. It is a P32 chassis with TBI 454 w/4L80E trans. And thank god this RV has no Auto park brake system.
Items I've replaced (Delco parts only if avail.)
1. TPS
2. EGR
3. VSS sensors
4. Purge valve
5. PCV valve
6. Idle control solenoid actuator
7. MAP sensor
8. O2 sensor (only 1 single wire)
9. IAC
10. Alternator
11. Belts
12. Radiator hoses & by-pass hose
13. T-stat
14. Ignition coil
15. Ceramic wired HD
16. Plugs
17. Distributor pick up coil
18. ICM
19. Aux fan motor
20. Front tires
21. Ignition switch (steering column)
22. Front rotors & pads (Centric ceramic)
23. Master cylinder
24. Doghouse relay
25. Rotor & cap
26. Shift solenoid A&B and internal wire harness (4L80E)
27. New batteries (x3)
28. B.I.R.D/Isolator relay/Solenoid
29. New fridge
30. LP regulator
31. Restored exterior of LP tank
32. DRAC module
33. Drive shaft rebuilt
34. Rear diff fluid
35. Trans fluid DexVI (x2 so far)
36. Exhaust donuts (x2) and springs/bolts
37. Generator VR regulator, fuel line, filter (Onan Micro4K)
38. Toilet
39. Shower faucet valve
and I'm sure some other stuff...LOL!

RE: The cat is out of the bag ! New Honda Generator !!

Anyone know of a generator that can be swapped in place of an in place Onan 4k relatively easily using preexisting wiring?
Had been giving this some thought in the event the Micro4K crapped out.

Need genrator help?

FYI....
For anyone in the Seattle area we have a great generator tech named Chuck. He's in Auburn, Wa. He agreed to come out to me (Renton-Highlands) and diagnose my Onan Microquiet 4K which would only run if I hold the start button.
I initially checked with a volt meter some pins and narrowed the issue down to either a bad control board or voltage regulator. When Chuck showed up he threw his Flight Systems G-Man 360 on it and within 5 min bingo...bad voltage regulator.
The voltage regulator that was on it had been replaced back in 7/11 with a Flight Systems 305. I was leaning at it being a bad control board.
So if you need a generator looked at call Chuck (253) 820-1388

RE: New generator technology product

I was given thought of a replacement for a gas generator....
1. Silent operation
2. No gas to burn
3. Lasts several days (one I linked)
4. Recharges via solar panel/s attached to roof or perhaps portable panels.
5. Low maintenance
Yes cost is a factor but so is replacing a gas generator such as an Onan 4K.
