RE: I-40 E to I-44E to I-70E? NM to VT

If the past 2 days of driving is any indication, I have no worries about driving through major cities. Amarillo, TX (not terribly major, but indicative) on I-40 right through the center and it looked like a ghost town with very little traffic even on the interstate. I'll check out that I-40 to I-81 route through Knoxville.

I-40 E to I-44E to I-70E? NM to VT

I am asking the best way to get from Tucumcari, NM to Brattleboro, VT in these unusual days. Any hints from current travelers would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Seasonal Site

I use my 21' at a seasonal campsite...and use it to travel in the rest of the seasons.

RE: How do you begin to plan for extended road trips?

I fill the gas tank up and head out in the general direction of my destination.

RE: VPN questions

And one very slight dis-advantage to a VPN using foreign computers is on occasion one of my banks or medical portal will block me as it looks like I am in a foreign country and they don't support that (their layer of security). But other than that I always use a VPN when going through a public network.

RE: We're you apprehensive going full-time?

When I decided to go full time in 2007, I was retired, single, big house and had been RVing part time for three years. In my younger years I traveled for many years with just a backpack, hitch hiking, commune to commune. So transitioning to owning nothing but an RV was not in the least bit daunting. My house was paid for, I had a pension from working 20 years, SS, IRA's. Money not a problem. Been full timing 12 years now. No regrets. Although starting to slow down...five month seasonal site in Vermont for the summer and then 7 months of travel.

RE: Solo Women Travellers

Not a bad idea. I have been a solo female full timer for 15 years and have heard many stories of how sales people don't take single women seriously. And although the majority of buyers are couples, women are next. I have seen many more single women living in their RV than single men. As far as advertising a smaller bed, well that's hilarious...I just took that bed space, removed the large "camping mat" and put in a twin size bed and thus had more room. Not rocket science.

RE: Harrisburg PA to Albany NY

Yep...81 to 88 was the best for me. 88 was smooth enough and when it wasn't the traffic was light enough for me to travel in the left lane. Only got one nasty horn honk from a trucker that passed me on my right.

RE: Snowbird Report Card

I spent the winter in Deming and Truth or Consequences NM. Elephant Butte, Rockhound and City of Rocks. Annual SP camping pass $225. Mostly used my solar, but it was an especially cold winter so got e/w sites for about 20% of the time ($4/day extra). Saw snow flurries, one night about an inch, but NO RAIN for the whole 5 months! One night 18 degrees, many nights in 30's. But warms right up with sunny days, which were every day.

RE: Snowbird Report Card

I am the reason for climate change. I spent 2 months in FLA, end of Jan to end of Mar. Last year Tampa area had the warmest Feb on record - I was there. This year the 2nd warmest, too hot. I move around and spent 31 days in free campgrounds that only had a vault toilet or portijohn. The problem was I was dependent on solar & did not bring my genny (Class B & not much storage) so could not run my AC. When it got too hot I did go to a paid camp for AC. To the poster re John Prince in Lake Worth. I spent 2 nights there last year & would not want to go back. They really jam you in there & the bathroom was old, dirty & w/o screens. The free spots were inland rural areas and are limited in the number permitted in so we spread out. I like your camping style...that is mine on years when I winter in Florida.

RE: Harrisburg PA to Albany NY

They are doing road repair on 81 both directions and so sections are one lane with traffic backed up for miles. And it took me almost an hour to get out of Harrisburg (rush hour). I made it just shy of Binghampton, parked at Flying J. At least the road surface was fine! Oh...while driving today there were about 10-12 (in batches of 2-4) small black SUV's with white license plates and blue & red flashing lights in back windows and sirens blaring and going 90 mph north on 81. No accidents. Extremely rare siting of something official. Secret police anyone?

RE: Harrisburg PA to Albany NY

OK...definitely will avoid 78. Is there anything else objectionable about 87 other than $$$? It would be a bit shorter plus there is a SP just south of Albany, right off 87, that I like to camp at.

I-78 to I-87 or I-81 to I-84 and then 87??? Road surface is a big consideration. Thanks!

RE: Little Rock AR to Harrisburg PA

Just to be clear: the BLUEGRASS Parkway is in Kentucky--from Elizabethtown to Lexington. It is a nice drive, even if as I do without stopping at even one distillery. Kentucky has a system of parkways, had them before many of the interstates. Some of them are now being incorporated into the interstate system. I take the Western Parkway to the Bluegrass Parkway. Have also used the Cumberland Parkway across southern Kentucky. Thanks for the clarification! Looks like it parallels 62 and totally doable. Thanks for the tip!

RE: RV Park Fees

I know of a place that charges $600/yr in AZ. A lot that are $150-$350/mo and $1500/yr in NM.

RE: Full time RV Living

I have been full timing since 2008 and still love it. I'm single and 75 so have to admit the driving part is getting more tiring. So I am compensating by limiting daily miles to less than 200, often 100-150. Slowing down LOL.

RE: Little Rock AR to Harrisburg PA

I would try to work in Bluegrass Parkway if you haven't done it. Maybe a distillery tour. Makers Mark or Woodford Reserve. I just did I-76 west bound from I-99. Not a good drive in torrential rain. Maybe pick a US highway and follow it east. US60, US62, etc. I have done the Blueridge (in the Fall...WOW) and am not a drinker. I am thinking 67 to 69 to 62 to I-64 to I-79.

Little Rock AR to Harrisburg PA

Can I have both a non mountainous route and yet have it be scenic? Or am I asking for too much? Oh, and make it direct with a smooth surface too LOL. I-74 or I-81 or something else?

RE: Traveling new england

Don't miss Vermont's "Northeast Kingdom"...Newport, Island Pond, Jay Peak area. The most rural area with lots of small villages with town greens and white churches. Newport has a wonderful small city campground right on international Lake Memphremagog, right on a bike path that you can ride into Canada. Lots of good restaurants and local music and breweries and farmer's markets.

RE: SR 290 to SR 71 through Austin?

So I went on 290 as I approached Austin from the west going east, quite a bit of traffic about 10-20 miles out. This was around 11AM. Once I got on 71 it was easy going until I choose 71 toll. That was hard to get on as it was four lanes over with entrance on the left. And NO TOLL BOOTH, which makes it difficult for us full timers without a tag for every state and who only get mail rarely. By the time I get the notification they have fined me for being late. Ugh! I think I should of stayed on the non-toll 290, it looked ok as it met up with 71. All was good then.
