RE: Generator/Shore Power Work, Battery Power Doesn't

If you force the relay contacts together with additional manual force and everything starts working then there is your problem. The relay contacts are dirty and must be cleaned and dressed with a relay file. That should restore the proper operation of that relay.

RE: Generator/Shore Power Work, Battery Power Doesn't

Well if that was true then when with shoreline power or generator running then both sets of lights, AC powered and DC powered should both be on. I think this problem needs to be troubleshot by an experienced RV technician at a RV shop such as Camping World or similar.

RE: Generator/Shore Power Work, Battery Power Doesn't

Well it means that you have a really weird problem that most likely can’t be solved on this forum. I can’t believe it is somehow related to a defective charger/converter. To prove that your charger/converter is working properly do this test. Measure your battery voltage without generator or shoreline power. I think you said it was 12.4 vdc. Then on shore line or generator power, the battery voltage should increase to at least 13.8 vdc indicating that your batteries are being charged. If no change then your charger/converter is defective or AC power to it disconnected or associated circuit breaker tripped? Also most motorhomes are equipped with a house battery master ON/OFF switch. Make sure that switch is ON.

RE: Generator/Shore Power Work, Battery Power Doesn't

OK. In all motorhomes that I am familiar with the DC operated lights are hardwired to the battery thru a fuse marked LIGHTS in your fuse panel. That connection is not interrupted while on generator or shoreline power or not. So what you describe seems unlikely. Now your water pump is DC powered like your lights. Does your water pump work in all cases like it should?

RE: Generator/Shore Power Work, Battery Power Doesn't

Now when I use the generator or shorepower no AC or appliances. But if i plug into shore power i have everything but lights, but the appliances and AC work. Would that indicate the converter is bad? You are confusing above. First you say when I use the generator or shorepower there is no A/C or appliances working. Then in your next sentence you say if you plug into shore power then you have everything’s except lights. Please explain???

RE: I'm buying one (surprise)

Generator won’t start, water won’t flow, radio doesn’t work, tires are shot. What other signs do you need that this motorhome has had very poor care. Unless owner fixes all problems before you buy it, I would walk.

RE: BORN FREE's Kim Olson still in the RV business?

I am 79 years old and own a 2002 Born Free 26’ RSB coach. Probably my last motorhome since what I have still works well. If something needs fixing I just spend the money to fix it. If I ever wanted to upgrade, I would seriously consider a Lazy Daze. This coach is only available factory direct just like the Born Free was for many years.

RE: BORN FREE's Kim Olson still in the RV business?

Kim Olson like all other former Born Free employees have moved on and found other jobs. The original factory is not producing any motor homes but the last I knew, pontoons for pontoon boats were being made there. I live 75 miles from that factory location and travel by it occasionally in my travels around the state of Iowa. The last time I had contact with Kim, he told me that he was considering starting up a website to source and sell common Born Free replacement parts and when and if he did that, he would advertise this on the Born Free Leap’n Lions RV Club’s website. So far he has not done this and so far it looks unlikely. The club’s website’s forum offers sources of some parts in both the Coach Modifications and Technical Library sections.

Onan Generator Start Motor Continues to Run

Interesting problem. I have a 2002 Class-C with an Onan Emerald BGE 4000 watt generator. For some reason when I push the start button on the generator that after the generator starts the starter motor continues to run. Only way to stop that is to push the stop button which of course also shuts off the generator. Anyone else experience this problem and what the fix it?

RE: electrical issue

Actually 50 amp service delivers 6000 watts of power, not 12,000 watts. If your rig is equipped with two A/Cs, your shore line power plug should be only compatible with 50 amp service which will run your two A/Cs.

RE: Tow or drive the dinghy to the mountains?

Well I have climbed twice up to 11,158 ft on I-70 west of Denver to go thru the Eisenhower Tunnel with my Born Free pulling a 3,200 lb toad. The highest elevation in Iowa is about 1550 ft. I really don’t think those steep overpasses in Iowa will tax your Class-C.

RE: Tow or drive the dinghy to the mountains?

I happen to be a website administrator for our Born Free RV Club and I live in Iowa. Years ago I had a member who lived in Florida contact me that he was planning on driving his Born Free up to Winnipeg, Canada via passing thru western Iowa on I-29. He wanted to know if I thought his Born Free could handle the mountains in western Iowa. True story if you can believe it!

RE: Best Class C for the money

If there really was only one best Class-C RV brand, it would be the only brand left on the market.

RE: Motorcycle on stock hitch

My opinion is that hanging 500 lbs on the rear hitch of a Class-C RV is asking for problems. The typical Class-C has extended frame rails to which the rear hitch it mounted. The 500 lbs mounted on the hitch could easily add 750 lbs to the rear axle and remove 250 lbs from the front axle causing both over-loading of the rear axle and too light weight on the front axle handling problems.

RE: Replacement for Onan 4000

True story. Several years ago I stopped at a RV generator shop in Flagstaff to repair my 4000 watt Onan that would quit running intermittent. Problem fixed with a new fuel pump. My Onan had around 450 hrs on at the time. I was telling the technician that we had a RV Club member that had 1450 hrs on his Onan. The tech said that a properly maintained Onan would last a lot longer than that. He said that north of Flagstaff is an Indian Reservation and all the homes are off the grid. He said that he maintains many Onan generators at these home sites that provide electric power on a 24/7 basis - generators running continuously except stopping for oil changes. These were 4000 watt Omans converted to propane fuel. He said he has one Onan that he services that currently had 38,000 hrs on it. Can anyone out there top that?

RE: toad versus no toad

My 26’ E450 V10 powered Class-C averages 8.5 mpg when not pulling my 3000 lb toad, 8.0 mpg when pulling it.

RE: toad versus no toad

Gas stations in the west part of the US are more open and as not as tightly packed as the eastern states where you live. I have always been able to fill my Class-C and toad without unhooking them.

RE: BORN FREE's Kim Olson still in the RV business?

Your stainless steel fuel tank was a Ford product not a Born Free product. Since your tank was made out of stainless steel how in the heck did you get it to rust? Stainless steel in normally extremely rust resistant.
