RE: cell phone in Mexico

You need an unlocked GSM phone. You can get a SIM card to join the Telcel Amigos sin limites plan (150 pesos for unlimited calls/texts to and from Mexico/USA/Canada, unlimited Facebook/Messenger/Whatsapp/Instagram while in Mexico, and about 1GB of data, at most big box stores in Mexico (Walmert, Chedraui, La Comer,etc.). You can recharge your account at all OXXO and thousands of little stores, or on line (website or Telcel app).

RE: Mr Morro !

It was closed when we were there last January, a couple of labourers were cleaning the mess left by a hurricane, I suppose. We boondocked at our usual spot further down on the beach. I heard it is now back in business, we will check it out soon.

RE: Los Pinos

Anybody know if Los Pinos in Tepic is still open? Never stayed there but thinking of overnight stay this trip. It was open when we passed through Tepic last January, we checked it out just to know what to expect in case we needed to stay there on our return trip, but we did not stay there. Nice and quiet place, for an RV campground.

RE: Lukeville crossing

Anyone know of any problems with crossing at lukeville? As of April 2019, no issue at Lukeville, both ways. The only problem I had was to find the new Banjercito and immigration building, it used to be at Caborca 100 km south of the border so I drove there, only to find the building closed, so I had to drive back north to the new location. Things may have changed since then, hopefully someone will chime in.

RE: Dude! Where's my tow truck?

Not fun. This happened to us last February when we were in the middle of nowhere on a mountain road in Chiapas, by the Guatemala border. We were stuck there for six weeks, nobody could fix the truck. We were able to crawl back to Canada, but not without wasting a couple of grands in temporary fixes to keep us going. I finally got the truck fixed a few months ago, to the tune of $8K.

RE: Ideas from those of you who built your own hold downs

My comment won't be very useful to you...but I am wondering if you could tell me the specs for the tubing you plan to use in the hitch. Thanks in advance.

RE: Tie down points?

Where do you put the S hook. I have HappiJac jacks and unless I take them off I don’t have a hole to go through I have Reico Jacks, i removed the lower Bolt securing the jack, and put an S hook in its place. 2014 Travel Lite 770P https://imgur.com/gallery/e6NHFJq

RE: Clean Trucks? Electric Truck?

This is also in my plans once we are done with the Americas, in 2 years. I have been toying with the idea of shipping my 2007 F350 6.0 diesel with my Travel Lite popup camper, but for the same reasons you raise, I scrapped my plan. I will be looking instead for a much smaller vehicle like a camperized van, but I really like having 4x4 because eventually, I'd like to continue toward Central Asia, so my options are limited in my budget range. A Sprinter would be nice but the price for a 4x4 conversion is prohibitive, so I am looking at the much smaller Mitsubishi Delica, Toyota Hiace, or something similar that has a gas engine. Less room but more versatile and agile, and I could easily build a sleeping platform, storage boxes, stove/sink etc. for under $1000. Friend is selling a VW LT35 WITH KARMANN MISSOURIE HOUSE. Motorhome is plated in Spain but currently in Mexico. Easy and relatively cheap to ship RORO to Europe. Owner moved there a year or so ago after traveling North America and Mexico. Fantastic condition inside and out. The VW LT 35 is built in 2003, the engine is a 2,8 Liter Diesel TURBO INTERCOOLER HEAVY DUTY. 185,000 km. He is asking 25,000 euros.

RE: The Beauty of Day Spots

This is a great idea, I never thought of that. We rarely if ever pay for camping and have lot-docked only a handful of times when we really had no choice. In the end, we do waste a lot of time trying to find a nice and scenic camp spot. We could just "squat" a nice day-use area during the allowable hours, go hiking, biking, canoeing, whatever...then at the end of the day, just move to the nearest parking lot or elsewhere where it is permitted to spend the night. Rinse and repeat.

RE: Tie down points?

I removed the bottom bolt from each jack so I can attach an S hook to the corner metal plate and tie the turnbuckles. Much more secure and less possibility of breakage than using the normal ring on the camper itself. Whenever I need to take the camper off my the truck, which is very rare, I just put the bolt back for added safety.
