RE: 04 Chev 1500 as a tow vehicle 8000lb camper

Is that with your current truck? Nope. That was with my first TT and TV. I left 1/2 tons after that, at least for towing duty. I still have that TV though. I rebuilt the diffs, and it is a daily driver. No more towing for it.... I will add, that there were tranny problems with it as well back when it towed. Ok good to know, I think I have a small axle seal leak so I will be checking it out very soon, sucks that I just put $100.00 worth of gear oil in it, lol

RE: Storage compartment door repair or replacement

Can you drill out the rivets on the door and remove the fiberglass, replace it with sheet aluminum? I was thinking that, or machine a piece of pvc and put the aluminum trim, but dont want to leave the compartment open for long incase i run into problems

RE: Storage compartment door repair or replacement

If i spend the money to replace mine, would like to go to the pull style latch, is it possible to switch to that style?

RE: Storage compartment door repair or replacement

I looked at the replacement ones on amazon but it doesn't say anything about radius size on the page. My trailer look great other then these doors, started happening since pretty well new. Poor design on this camper i guess

RE: Storage compartment door repair or replacement

Or a place that can replace my doors with correct radius, i am a machinist so i could make new ones out of 1/2” pvc and have them painted

Storage compartment door repair or replacement

My compartment doors seem to be taking on water, and have become delaminated. There is no water in the storage area, just in the doors. Just wondering if had attempted to repair these doors by replacing the plywood and fibreglass sheet, or reuse the old fibreglass with a spray epoxy or something?

RE: 04 Chev 1500 as a tow vehicle 8000lb camper

....snip..... Your a brave lad coming on a rv forum and brag about your 1/2 ton combo. Or, he wants to rattle the cage of folks who are pretty sure a fifteen year old 1500 series truck that is probably over on three out of four ratings is not a good choice for towing over 8,000 pounds. He got a few of us to take the bait. That was not my intention, but after reading your reply I guess it does sound like a bad idea. I did try to downgrade to a smaller unit, but was offered about half of what i owe towards a second hand smaller one. My truck is only used to haul the camper, so it is hard to justify buying a new one.

RE: 04 Chev 1500 as a tow vehicle 8000lb camper

Dangerous, just plain dangerous..... Please explain, my truck maintains highway speed with low rpm, i have an upgraded suspension, upgraded brakes, and the trailer has absolutely no sway. We all cant afford 3500 diesels, but my trailer tows great with what i have. Might be different if i planed a trip across the country

RE: 04 Chev 1500 as a tow vehicle 8000lb camper

I feel that my brakes are as good as alot of 3/4 tons, and with my gear ratio and engine I seem to have more than enough power to pull this trailer. With the lower gear ratio there should be less wear on the drivetrain. As I said before, my first time towing this camper was with the company f350 dually diesel, so I do know the difference between the two trucks. I will probably get a 2500 down the road, but my point of the post is that my truck can haul this camper without much effort. I do agree with the comments about the rear end and will be keeping a close eye on it. What do you "feel" about the axle shaft supporting all of the weight? Because no modern 3/4 or 1 ton truck has semi floating axles. You're on borrowed time. so now you are saying I need a 2500HD?

RE: 04 Chev 1500 as a tow vehicle 8000lb camper

Inspct the magnent in the 10 bolt diff often. I will likely be collecting a LOT of metal. My 12 bolt did that for awhile before it went boom.... And that was towing a lighter TT than yours. Good luck, and save some money up, for breakdowns. I will be changing my diff fluid on the weekend will check it out, thanks

RE: 04 Chev 1500 as a tow vehicle 8000lb camper

Yeah i agree if i was in a mountain area i would have much more issues, Nova Scotia is pretty flat compared to BC, and my tanks are always empty, we travel for Baseball so pack pretty light. I wouldnt push the truck too far, longest trip we plan is about 2 hours from home, no mountian trips for us

RE: 04 Chev 1500 as a tow vehicle 8000lb camper

In 04 a 16”wheel wont fit, was told because they have bigger brakes, they are dual piston calipers. It is actuall a pain to get brakes for it, I think there are 3 different options, might not be a Z71 thing, but i thought it was
