By now you’ve heard of Harrison Bailey’s accolades as a gunslinger in Georgia’s Class 7A high school football conference. At the conclusion of his career at Marietta High School in Marietta, Ga., Bailey trailed only Jake Fromm, Trevor Lawrence, and Deshaun Watson on Georgia’s list of all-time passing leaders.

There’s a reason Bailey was a five-star recruit and the highest rated quarterback for UT in years. Needless to say, his first minutes in a Tennessee football uniform last week were highly anticipated and greatly appreciated.

Though he only saw action in one drive, and it’s worth noting the game was all but lost at this point late in the fourth quarter, Bailey completed a nice throw to fellow true freshman Malachi Wideman along the sideline for 24 yards. He’s a young player that’s garnered more hype than anyone else on UT’s roster and should see the field against Alabama.

Perhaps most importantly, freshman quarterback Harrison Bailey could hear his name called against Alabama. He entered late in the Kentucky game after starter Jarrett Guarantano and backup J.T. Shrout both struggled.

Thinking Out Loud's Brandon Boykin explains why it's time for Tennessee freshman Harrison Bailey to start at QB over Jarrett Guarantano.

Is it time for Bailey to start for the Vols?

Photo of Harrison Bailey I shot off my TV during the #6 Florida vs. Tennessee game on CBS today.

True freshman Harrison Bailey made his first career start and completed 3 of 4 passes for 21 yards in the first quarter. Bailey got the start in place of redshirt senior Jarrett Guarantano, who has struggled this season during Tennessee's 2-5 start. But Bailey will have his hands full if he's going to help the Volunteers keep pace with the high-powered Florida offense.

I thought he did ok. They didn't really try to have him make too many difficult passes, but a good start none the less.

Tennessee once again started true freshman Harrison Bailey, but Jeremy Pruitt said before the game that he also planned on playing J.T. Shrout — which he did. However, the timing of that decision was just a little bit odd.

Bailey started 7-7, and not even really a conservative 7-7. He was making throws in the intermediate and taking advantage of a Vanderbilt defense that only had 18 scholarship players available. He was in a groove, until he was hit during a pass that was somehow ruled a fumble.

Each of Tennessee's three available scholarship quarterbacks – Hendon Hooker, Brian Maurer and Harrison Bailey – delivered solid performances in the spring game, but Bailey took top honors by completing 12 of 15 passes for 260 yards with two touchdowns.

Which Tennessee football quarterback has the most upside?
