Denali is awesome but don't make it your only focal point. There will be so many gorgeous places before you even get to Denali. Canada and the Yukon in many places can be just as beautiful as Alaska.. sometimes more so. Once you enter Alaska you really need to do the full circle and check out each area. This is a trip of a lifetime. Many do it more than once but I'd say most do not. If you're retired and have time plan on using as much as you can. Plan to cross from the lower 48 into Canada by the end of May and spend all summer on the trip.

I'd say ditto on this for the most part, although it's an article of faith that nothing is more scenic than Alaska. [emoticon]

Although there are many areas of great scenery, depending on the route one takes, I've always found coastal BC and the Kluane/Burwash area to be spectacular on the drive North.

In Alaska, Denali probably has the "best" (using that term advisedly) combination of tourist/RV amenities, road access, and scenery. However, there are spectacular views to be had along the roads to/from Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Valdez.

...then there's always Wrangell-St. Elias if one wants to see big mountain country.

FWIW, Denali (and Glitter Gulch) tend to wrap up pretty tight and quick after mid-September.

Thanks to all for the great information! I will continue to reevaluate my trip. What is the "Circle" you mention?

Janet, we are touring your great state of AZ now but are planning to go to AK in June, July and maybe August. We may have one or two other campers toddling along. Planning a side trip up the Dempster and maybe Tuk (but not in MH).

At Tok you can continue straight on the AK Hwy and do a counter-clockwise circle to return to Tok.
Or turn left onto the Tok cut-off and Glenn Highway and do a clockwise circle to return to Tok.

We usually check the weather in Valdez when we're at Tok. If it is sunny we head to Valdez first to enjoy the beauty. It if is raining, then we head to Fairbanks first and hope the weather clears by the time we get to Valdez. The drive into Valdez is spectacular http://yukonsights.ca/20100824_Nabesna-Blueberry.html

One trip, the rain was harsh at Valdez and none of the glorious sights could be seen. So now we let Mother Nature determine whether we're going clockwise or counter-clockwise around the circle.

Welcome to our Alaska bound group. You will get tons of information here. If you have a question just ask. Someone here will know the answer. Some of us have been to Alaska several times and some are first-timers and some actually live in the area and have been great with information. Don't forget to look at and maybe print the topic in the front of this forum "Helpful ideas for Alaskan Travel". Put together by myself and others from this forum. Lots of great ideas. Also some of us are making some sort of sign for either tow, MH or both so we can recognize each other while on the road. Can be as simple or elaborate as you want with "Roll Call Alaska 2018" and your CC name and your name (if you wish). Hope you are enjoying Arizona. It is where I live and love it here!

Again don't forget to read up on the sticky at the front of the forum and don't forget your signs, so we can find you

We are really going to have a great group going this year. Don't forget to make your signs so we can spot each other. Basically last time I just took some poster board from the dollar store and placed a few pictures and the words "Roll Call 2018". You can also post your name and CC name. Some (last time) placed it in their tow car window and some placed it in their MH window. We met some wonderful people. Usually we would meet up in the campgrounds and the sign helped us to spot each of us.

Sadly all our plans for this year, just like last year are out the window, will not make it to Alaska, very annoying especially after all the info I got from Sue.T who was a wealth of knowledge, even got the book Alaska milepost last year.

Janet, We would like to join the Alaska in 2018 group. This is our first post on rv.net. We plan on heading up around mid-June and returning early September. This will be our 3rd trip to Alaska but first in our RV. Please add us to your list. We will be sure to have a distinctive sign that will identify us. Hint: look for a yellow rose.
