Full Synthetic oil in 2016 Dodge diesel

Hi All. I just switched from conventional oil to full synthetic oil. The dodge owners manual states that oil changes are needed every 14K miles or after 6 months or if the on board oil indicator states it is time. Which ever of these evens occurs first. My question is does anyone really put on 14k miles before changing the oil? With conventional oil I changed the oil at 3K to 5K miles. This is my first experience with using a full synthetic oil. At lease half of my driving is with the 5th wheel trailer (weight about 9,000lbs ready to camp) attached. Thanks for the comments. Jim2007

Back when I had a 99 F350 Powerstroke, I went the bypass filter route, changing the filter at the recommended interval of 5K, along with a Blackstone report. I averaged 15K between changes. Now a 15K change is the norm, with a 30K change with bypass.

With the cost of diesel oil and filters, I had decided not to get another diesel, but that was before I knew the change intervals are 3 times what they were. Since it would be a DD and 640 miles a week, that's expensive maintenance at 5K rounds.

Rethinking the diesel route now.

Since T6 now has changed, and is no longer approved for use in a Ford diesel, will you continue to use it?

I don't think the oil has changed, it's Ford realized they need another spec for the PS.

The formulation changed in 2016 I believe. Ford has determined this change is no longer an approved oil due to this.

Interesting! All seems kinda weird.

Thanks

I could be wrong but the way I understand it when they went to the CK4 formulation there is some difference that Ford does not like. It is still CJ4 approved so it all get confusing.

I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.0 V6 EcoDiesel.

Manual states oil change will not exceed 10,000 miles or 12 months.

That said, I won't come close to that in my oil changes. Usually at 6-7 months and only 5-6,000 miles. Oil life is only at 50% or so.

Necessary no, but it's what I feel comfortable at. Cheap insurance.

My extended warranty is 8 years and 120,000 miles. I use Rotella T6 5W-40 as recommended,(full synthetic). 8 quarts, probably half of what the Cummins uses.

I document my oil changes with photos each time. CYA. If any warranty issues come up, hopefully I'm covered.

The extra $100 or so I spend each year for oil changes isn't breaking the bank.

We spend 50-70K on these vehicles, and a little extra preventive maintenance sure can't hurt.

I think many of us had it beaten into our heads by our fathers that you MUST change oil every 3000 miles. Never mind that this mindset came about back when trucks used straight 30 or 40 weight non-detergent oil with a roll of toilet paper for a filter cartridge. (and you were lucky to get 75,000 miles between rebuilds)

Many call the shorter oil changes "cheap insurance", but a full synthetic diesel oil change is hardly cheap, while an oil analysis is fairly cheap and provides hard data on the condition of the oil and when it's appropriate to change it.

Why?

What makes you think your oil won't make it to 10 or 15K.

What makes you think your oil will make it to 2K let alone 5K?

A lot of people go by the color of the oil when choosing to drain the sump.

The Duramax with it's ninth injector reduces the chance of oil/fuel dilution so it should be a solid candidate to go the full OCI.

Don't be! Call Blackstone and get a sample kit for your next change. Based on your oil results ask then what interval they would recommend. Be sure to get the TBN test.
