Alternate routes to Mission Texas off of 10 East

Returning from San Diego I will be on 10 and would like a more direct route to Mission Texas. I am looking at trying route 173 out of Kerrville Texas to 35, then 16 south toward Rio Grane City and then into Mission form there

Any feedback on 173, 16 and or any other suggestions about alternative routes to Mission off of 10 would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I have used 83 all the way from I-10 and used 285 at Fort Stockton to 90 and 90 from Van Horn to 277 and taken that to 83. All of those are/were good roads and at RV speeds as fast or faster than staying on I-10 going further east to cut off.

We run 16 every winter from Freer to Zapata. Traveled it from San Antonio to Zapata a couple years ago. 16 is a good chip n' seal highway. It's long, wide & fairly strait with wide shoulders. Lightly traveled.
