I'd definitely take paulj's suggestion on the west route. US 93 to the Canadian border is a nice 2 lane hwy. Pretty drive. From Coram, I would NOT head east to go north.....unless there are places along the way you specifically wanted to see.

From Coram, MT take 93 north to Radium Springs to Banff = 302 miles

From Coram, MT take 93 north to 22 to 1 west = 360 miles

We've done 93 to Radium Springs a few times - very pleasant drive.

The one that is closer to Coram, MT

The direct route from the BC one is too trivial to ask.

If you like seeing wildlife, you will have a better chance of seeing bears in Kootenay NP. We made the trip from West Glacier through Radium to Banff this past June. Canyon Camp RV Resort is a good RV Park in Radium. Early AM is best time to see bears.

OK, so you are starting on the west side. There isn't one best route.

One option is US2 to the east side, and US89 north. But 89 to St Marys winds through foothills, and people often recommend bypassing that stretch via 464 from Browning. 49 is a tempting 'shortcut', but involves mountain driving over a ridge. It may even have length restrictions.

North of St Marys, you have the choice of 2 out in the plains, or 6 to Waterton. 22 and 40 are the most scenic choices along the east side of the Canadian Rockies.

Staying on the west side, take US93 to Canada. BC3 crosses an easy pass into Alberta (Crowsnest), where you can then take 22 north. Stop at the Franks Slide interpretive center. There are also some nice waterfalls off of 3 at 22 (Lundbreck Falls).

Or stay on 93 to 95 to Radium, and then into Kootenay NP and on to Banff. There are several hot springs along the way. And Kootenay has some nice stops and short hikes.

OP here. I will be coming out of Coram, MT. Never been to this part of USA -which is why we are going there. Planning on being there 26 July.

And consider leaving 22 at Longview and taking 40 into Kananaskis country.

Our route last year. Good suggestion.
