f250 VS f350

My daughter is looking to buy a new F 250 or F 350 and asking Dad for advice. She is looking at the 6.2 gasser. Considering how small the price difference is between the two, I'm looking for some learned opinions. Her yet to be purchased trailer will be a 2 horse trailer with living quarters. Typical trailer weights she is looking at will be around 7,000 pounds with a GVRW of 16,000. Guessing loaded it will be around 11,000. Any advice would be appreciated.

2017 up the differential is different between the F250 & F350 diesels, that may have caused the confusion.

Same truck, differnet springs. Doesn’t matter.
Actually I think the 350 has a slightly heavier rear axle but it’s not the limiting part of the equation.
Different transmission, F-250 has torque shift G, F-350 heavier duty torque shift is my understanding.

Yes, my bad, I recall reading the same thing. 6R100 vs 6R140.

Grit...bad, No, just showing your age, living in the past! If you want to run with the younger dogs, you gotta keep up on the new stuff.:C

I agree, but I think the 250 with diesel has same HD torque shift as 350 gas and diesel.

Went to the Ford site and you are correct the Diesel F-250 uses the same transmission as the F-350 Diesel, just the gas version is different.

Buy the F250, only if you need it. I often visit the DW family in NJ. That means neighborhood parking restrictions, left lane (10k) gross or less, road restrictions, and parkways. Oh yes, I would also have to get a commercial EZ Pass for the 350. Please note these only apply when running bob tail. Otherwise get the 350, you are close if your weights are right.

Ford use to offer and likely still does, a no charge 10k GVWR option for the F350. it was/is nothing more than a door sticker indicating GVWR is 10k lbs rather than 11500.

I don't know if any dealers in Canada order f250's. I'm sure there are some but they are rare.

As far as I'm concerned Ford should build the f250 suspension to carry what the truck and its tires can support. The f350 should have duals.

So in other words the f350 srw should be badged a f250 and what is currently badged f250 should be discontinued.

I run an older F250. 2012 with 4.30 diffy towing only 10K. It suits my towing needs well.

However if I were going to get a new F250 now I would be spooked on the 250 and 350 not having the same tranny anymore. I guess time will tell on that change? :h

I had a 2008 F250 and now a 2016 F350 SRW. Go with the 350 and yes I have the diesel. The 350 rides just as nice as the 250 and it even rides nice when unloaded. It is my daily driver for the most part and it it extremely comfortable. Maybe it is the leather seats but it is really nice. I would never go back to a 250 because the price difference is not much and the payload/towing increase is nice.

Hitch weight is a big consideration.

Depending on the configuration, running without the horses could mean a substantial increase in hitch weight if the horses sit behind the trailer axles. This is common to toy haulers but the same effect is likely here.

The 2017-18 Super Duty's the F350 has a different spring pack and a totally different differential compared to a F250.

F250 gas trans is different.

I'd suggest not considering the 250 for that weight. Got for the 350 and get the 4.30 gearing. But do some homework on the tongue weights of that trailer. Given the GVWR of the trailer I'm guessing its a gooseneck. Even 20% of the GVWR is 3200#. Add a couple humans in the truck, some gear and some stuff in the bed and your going to be up against or over the GVWR of a SRW 350. If you go over to ford-trucks_com there is a guy with a 6.2 dually driving as a hot shot. Might be something to consider. Sure, a diesel dually is ideal but how much will be be towing and is the premium price for the diesel engine feasible.
