Ram 3500 4.10's expected MPG

So we're already thinking of trading our new toyhauler and since I'm on the upper limits of my 2500 already I'm truck shopping again.

Towing around 70 mph I usually get around a 9 mpg average with my 3.42's in all types of terrain. I'm looking at a 2018 dually with the Aisin and 4.10's. I can't imagine it getting worse, but will it ? Right now I'm only towing around 14K lbs, but that could go up considerably real soon.

Just curious on what to expect different between the two trucks from those that might have had both at one time.

80 in the fronts is to help keep the outside wear down and even out the wear pattern. As for mileage I am at 27K combined and average close to 9 pulling at 62-64 MPH.

Just curious, why run the fronts at max psi all the time? Is that for the expected extra weight while towing? Seems the front weight would be the same from a 2500-3500.

The sticker does say 80 psi for fronts.

I don't think the tires are rated as high on duallys, so you have less leeway on running them at a lower pressure than you do with the 18" or 20" tires on the SRW trucks.

Well we brought it home yesterday and I could really tell a big difference just on the short ride home. MUCH more pull from a dead stop. I can't wait to hook up the TH this weekend.
Coming home I couldn't help but feel like it needed to shift up, that'll take some getting use to. I'd guess about 500 rpm at 60 mph difference. I'd say empty mileage could take as much as a 5 mpg hit, but that's OK.

Something else too, coming from my 2500 to this I swear there's hardly any noticeable difference in the ride quality either, and I noticed ALL 6 tires were over 80 psi coming home.

Pics or it's just another Fantasy!!!

Run your front tires at 80 ALL the time, run the rears at 35 solo. Towing run at 65 rear but you could go lower depending on your rear axle weight.

Take my word on this, get your front end alignment set to 1/64. Reason is the factory setting is 1/4 and this WILL cause outside front tire stepping. Leave the rear tires where they are, DON'T rotate. Front tires leaving the rotation the same move side to side. This requires breaking down the tires from wheels. Do this every 15K and your tires will last as long as they possibly can.

My advice is put on a set of Michelin Defenders and sell the NEXEN's. I did so at 250 miles and sold the take offs for $650.

So fill in your signature, truck details.

OK, simply look at the chart. If your combined is 29K or less go with the 3.42's WITH the AISIN. Tow in 5th at the same rpm as the 4.10's in 6th. Benefit is great mileage running solo. FORGET the 3.73's, don't compromise.

I towed 29K combined with my 11 HO RAM Dually, it performed great. ONLY issue was getting the load rolling on grade. The AISIN solves that!

Your empty mileage will take a hit, but I doubt your towing mileage will be much different. Maybe some depending on how much weight you're adding but not enough to make any financial difference relative to what you'll be spending trading for a new truck and toy hauler.

Yea I knew I'd take a hit empty, man the 3.42's are sweet for long distance empty, averaged over 20 mpg on a trip to Fla once. My boys race every weekend now so it's become a dedicated tow vehicle, literally sits all week.

We have a 2018 RAM 3500 DRW 2x4 with a 4:10 axle ratio, our unloaded mileage is 16 to 17 depending on how heavy my foot is. When towing our Redwood at a weight of 17K so our combined weight is right at 26k I get 9 to 10 mpg again depending on how heavy my foot is and the terrain. I usually tow at about 68 mph and get a fairly consistent 10 mpg on flat ground.

I understand new trucks do better, but my 07 4x2 quad cab dually does 10.5-11.5 towing my 13,500 pound fiver all day. BTW it does have 4.10 RE. Empty I have seen 17 all day at 70.
