Left and right as the vehicle is moving forward and a passenger/driver is facing forward. Curbside and street side is universal. Driver side and passenger side changes in some countries (UK) and some vehicles (mail truck).

I can do ya one better? Which is the right and left side of a bed? And, if it's a double sleeping bed, which side is the "drivers" side? Left, right, his or hers? [emoticon] So, which side is the "drivers" side after all?

Which is why in boating the terms Starboard and Port are used instead of right and left. Starboard would be the passenger side and Port the .....

port and left have 4 letters. starboard and right no common. that's how I remember.

Just use door side and off door side, then you can not go wrong in North America.

In boating all the short words go together:
Port
Left
Red

All the long word go together:
Starboard
Right
Green

Learned that in the Sea Scouts in the late 50's.
