Drove alongside a wildfire today

After spending a couple of weeks in OR, we were heading to Vernon BC to attend a family memorial and over-nighted in Oliver, BC near the Can/US border. We knew there was a fire near our planned route to Vernon but it worsened overnight. Detouring around the fire would have added hours to the trip but reports said the highway was still open so we left early in the am.

On the way through Peachland, BC (in the BC Okanagan), the wildfire was right alongside the 4-lane highway 97. The police were escorting one lane of traffic through at a time in each direction. Entire trees were burning near us. The heat was intense and we could hear the loud crackling of the trees on fire. The flames were racing up the hillside.

The fire has now doubled in size and hwy 97 was closed so we were fortunate to get through earlier in the day. Have never been closer than a few miles from a wildfire but to be that close was pretty unnerving and a display of the incredible power of nature.

We feel so bad for the people in Peachland that were evacuated and on evacuation alert - and are very grateful and appreciate the hard and dangerous work of the fire and police crews.

If our BC Wildfire Service, local firefighters and the police say a road is still open to normal traffic then you know it's still safe to pass through.

From what I understand, the fire got really bad a few days ago and there was another nearby wildfire they were battling. They did a controlled burn to join the two fires together so they could get it all under better control sooner, which they did. Roads are fully open again and I think all evacuation orders have now been lifted.

The wildfire season still has a long way to go and anything can happen anywhere at any time.

As a youngster I worked many firelines. I look back at some of the places I was and just thank God that he took care of us and got us all out safely. My prayers go out to all of the firefighters. They have a very difficult job to do. Thank them for their service if you talk to any of them.

I'm thinking gas and propane are hardly a worry. If the fire can cause issues with your on board fuel, it's already too late.

Glad you are safe. But why would u drive through an area like that with a tank of gas and propane?
Because we didn't want to add another 3 hours or more to our trip which would have made it 6+ hours total. The shortest alternate route was a challenging twisty mountainous road and the next alternative route after that would have added a further few hours of driving. Plus we were guessing that many were already using alternative routes that could have made for some slow traffic. After having already towed our TT for about 2K miles in the past 2+ weeks, we just wanted to get to our destination asap.

There were still quite a few RVs, trucks and other vehicles on the road early that morning when we went through. The live gov't reports were saying hwy 97 was still fine for single lane escorted traffic traffic at the time we left that morning. But the fire obviously worsened a lot throughout the day. If it wasn't safe, they would have turned traffic back well before the fire zone.

A state of emergency has now been declared today in the Peachland area and we were lucky to get through when we did.

It made me think of the images on TV of the fires at Fort McMurray in Alberta a couple of years ago and the long lines of vehicles fleeing the area with flames and sparks all around them. Seeing flames racing up the hillside and trees exploding into flames like firecrackers before your very eyes is something to behold and very frightening. I can't imagine how hard it must be for the firefighters.

It's bad in the Vantage area of Wa/ State right now too. I90 East bound is closed.
Last weekend we were in Wenatchee Wa. and were nearly evacuated because of fires.
Looks like it's going to be another bad fire season.
