Is this the norm or do I need to set it some way? I thought it was for North America.

It's possible that the RAM is maxed out and it can't load the full map suite - you might have to add an SD card to increase the memory capacity.

If your Garmin works like mine, set it to go to Mexico and it will give you directions to Canada.

Lower 49?
You can buy the extra/missing map(s) at the Garmin site per Dave's link, if they weren't included in your LM subscription. Not sure if they include "traffic", but it can be useful sometimes, too.
Mike. Comments are anecdotal or personal opinions, and worth what you paid for them.

I encountered that three years ago. Apparently you need to purchase the Canadian map. I sure could have used it then but I hadn't been aware of the Canada limitation.
Check this site Garmin maps.

Have a look at "avoids/custom avoids" to make sure that "tolls" or "ferries" isn't checked. It may be avoiding a toll or ferry.
