Truck Question - duallie or single?

I'm considering purchasing a 5th wheel to replace my Class A. It would be a full-timer rig, so it won't be hauled a lot. But I'd end up using the truck as a daily driver, or mostly so. Looking to get a 1-ton, as I'm looking for a more comfy 5er, which means bigger.

So, would a rear end with single wheels do OK, or is that a real no no, and should I go duallie?

My brakes are exactly the same as the DRW version om my truck. I DRW does not have double the rubber on the road. It has more rubber on the road on the back hence the higher capacity rating for the rear axle but it actually has less rubber on the road in the front. The extra width in the rear has nothing to do with how stable it feels going down the road unless the suspension was sitting bottomed out on the bump stops.

The difference is in stopping ability. The DRW has double rear rubber on the road & bigger brakes. Even that is a minor difference IMO. The huge difference is the stability that the DRW provides. All the add ons that people put on their SRW cannot compensate for the inherent stability that the extra width of the DRW.

That is a a lot of weight on a single rear wheel. The 5er is between 18k and 20k so pin is between 3,600# and 5,000#, assuming about 3,200# empty 6,800# to 8,200# on your two rear tires. The high end is not pretty.


My 5er is 15-15.5k and my boat is 5k ( depending on fuel and live well load).

You do not have to "let" the air out. The valve extension are often noted as a leak point, similar to screw on TPMS senders and bolt in valve stems for trailer wheels.


Neither my 11 or 15 RAMโ€™s have ever lost air from the extenders.

Had that happen to me & I noticed something different quite quickly. There was a sway to the side of the deflated tire. Next stop I noticed that the outer tire was carrying much more load. Turned out that I had a valve failure on the inner tire.

Those with SRW think that having a dually is overrated. Those who have gone from a SRW to dually say they will never go back.

Many do the add ons to compensate for the SRWs. By the time some of them have finished they might as well have bought the DRW to begin with. That is not to say that DRW owners don't tinker also.

I have added Sulastic Shocks, which improve unloaded ride, & finally this year added Timbrens air bags, not really knowing if they would give an improvement to ride or not when loaded with the heavy 5er. They do. They minimise the big jolts & add even more stability in cornering.
