Differential Lube for 2016 Ram CTD 2500

As I mentioned in my other thread, I'm getting ready to change the diff lube in by 2016 Ram 2500 and would like some recommendation on gear lube.

I was looking at Mobil 1 Synthetic that meets the Ram GL-5 spec but notice it comes in 75W-90, not 75W-85 as recommended in the manual. Is this lube OK to use?

Just curious what others are using.

Also, according to the manual I do not need a friction modifier.

Update: Actually, my manual says to use 75W-85 in one section and 75W-90 in another section

I'm 2WD so I only need to do the rear diff.

Walmart's SuperTech 75w-90 works just as well as Mobil 1. It's GL-5 and quality stuff. Down here it's running $5.75/QT.

Is this your opinion or u have fact to back this up?

He stated a fact... API GL-5.

That is a minimum rating.

You are free to do your own research. There's plenty of UOAs out there comparing SuperTech line to Mobile 1 over the years. Exxon/Mobile is a major supplier for the brand so it makes sense why the two brands are comparable. I've been running it in differentials for a little over a decade now. Hundreds of thousands of miles later, nary a problem. Time spent out of the shop is the only fact that I need or care about.

Odd that you brought this up......

Once, when I still owned my 2014 RAM 3500 Tradesman Crew Cab DRW, I needed fluid for my rear axle service. Several places I went to only had two quarts of this or three quarts of that. While at an Oโ€™Reilly Auto Parts, I had little choice but to use their in-house brand Master-Pro 75W90 GL5 synthetic.

It worked as good as the Valvoline SynPower or the Mobil 1 Iโ€™d used previously.

Iโ€™d guess itโ€™s one or the other, in just different packaging and a different price point.

I cannot comment on the good or bad of their gear lube. However, as Chevy owners know, you must use Dexos Certified oil in your late model Chevy gas motors to keep your warranty in effect if you do your own oil changes. The Dexos cert is basically a synthetic standard from what I can see. The wife's Chevy Traverse requires Dexos certified. Oil. The Wal Mart Syntec Full Synthetic oil is now Dexos certified and it's about $17.00 for a 5 qt jug. That's good enough for the wife's Traverse with 80,000 miles.

Someone told me the mfg a while back but I can't remember who makes it. Of course, Wal Mart does not make anything so I assume it's made by some major mfg of motor oil. Lot of guys on the Corvette forums are using it.

As to their gear lube, who knows?

AMZ/OIL Severe Gear is top quality and highly rated. They recommend 75-110 towing heave and 75-90 for average use. The 75-140 is too heavy for the newer RAMโ€™s. It was the proper lube running the Dana towing heavy.

Cummins, thank you for the info. I always appreciate your comments regarding the CTD platform. Very helpful as usual.

Actually.....that is incorrect, at least for the 2018 MY 4500 & 5500 Cab & Chassis.

I think that's what I'm going with too, readily available at Wal Mart.

Does anyone recall how many qts it holds? Could not find that info in the manual.

I believe 6.3 pints.

Thanks for the info.

Actually, my old Tundra 5.7 used the same oil and I think I have a partial jug lying around somewhere!
