Sorry for the off topic, but my wife and I were scuba diving yesterday morning in Kona, Hawaii. She experienced chest pains, we went to the emergency room where after a CT scan the doctor says she has barotrauma to her chest. The doctor contacted the Dive Center on Oahu and they said no flying for 3 weeks.

So with all that said, fellow travelers, what's the quickest way to get off the big island and back to the mainland, preferably the port of Oakland but I will take anything that works without flying.

Thanks!

Possibly a cruise line might have a room?

We are looking into this, I am wondering if anyone has any experience booking passage on a cargo ship? It seems this may be an option.

Be careful with foreign flagged cruise ships. Unless there's been a change, they're required to stop at a foreign port after leaving a US port before they can enter another US port. That could make the voyage longer than expected...

I believe its against federal law to transport passengers from Hawaii to U.S. mainland on cruise or cargo ships, by foreign flag registered ship as most all are - part of the Passenger Vessel Services Act. You may have to look for a Canada or Mexico destination port, and go from there?

Matson is a popular cargo ship line traveling Hawaii to/from mainland that is U.S. flag, though I don't believe they allow transporting passengers?

Unfortunately, Hawaii is among the most remote islands, so not many options other than flying.

I believe the foreign port cannot be in North America, which would exclude both Canada and Mexico as a stop, before arriving in U.S. Mainland?

Contact Coast Guard. See if they have a vessel making the trip. Cruises on Cruise Ships aren't about speed.
Don't know if Coast Guard can help or not, just a shot.
They might have information on commercial or other vessels. If anyone would seems they would be the ones to know.
Good luck and prayers for your Wife and You.

Thanks everyone, Matson has a ship leaving Hilo tomorrow for Oakland, fingers crossed, otherwise we will be contacting the various cruise lines to see what's available. Or she gets a 3 weeks paid vacation in Hawaii...
