Last but certainly not least is the Cummins history lesson series. After completing the Duramax(LINK) and Powerstroke(LINK) history lessons, we finally get to the first direct injected turbo diesel in a pickup, the Cummins 12V 5.9L.

CUMMINS HISTORY, LESSON 4: ’03-‘07 5.9L

I think after reading some of these articles, many people will start to understand just how much the diesels have changed just to meet emissions. When you say diesel emissions, most people only think of EGRs, SCRs, and DPFs, but they don't think of injectors, turbos, heads pistons and so on. All of these were altered to meet emissions. This is why I say that even a deleted diesel is cleaner than a pre-2003 truck.

It is also why I say adding power(to an extent) with a tune or delete does not necessarily reduce reliability like many say. The stock map is made to keep emissions in check(above all else) even at the detriment of the engine's longevity. By removing things such is pilot and post injection, you reduce the amount of injection events thus reducing injector wear. This also keeps the engine cooler since post injection was designed to increase in-cylinder temps to fully burn off soot. There are many other things that make the engine more reliable with a tune versus the stock tune.

My first Cummins was in a 1971 Ford 9000 dump truck. I think it was a NHC 250, no blower. My Dad bought it brand new for just under 30 grand. It was the first diesel any of us had driven. I got to drive it on a private haul road at the ripe old age of 16. With 25 to 30 tons (normal overload) it would catch and pass all of the other gasoline dump trucks by the end of the day. It would actually get an extra load of coal to the tipple each day over the other trucks. Fast up the hills, and man did it hold back going down hill. Nobody ever bought another gas job. We are living in the promised land of pick ups right now. Any of the big 3 is hard to beat. I buy on the price and the seat!

The duramax was an all new design when it hit the market for my 2001. It was designed for pickups first.

I believe almost all of the diesel engines were designed for commercial use. The Ford PSD 7.3L was the International T444, the 6.0L was the VT365, and the 6.4L was the Maxxforce 7 used in many Navistar vehicles. The Duramax was design to be used in some Isuzu commercial vehicles as the 6600 and GM Kodiak/Topkick medium duty commercial vehicles.

Bottom line the 6BT is an engine made for Commercial use, let's not forget Marine applications!

Interesting that ram/cummins stayed with Bosch fuel systems and TUPY for block castings the entire life span.

A guy at work I go offshore fishing with sometimes has either a 98 or 99 4 valve that only gets used to pull his offshore boat; otherwise it sets in his garage in mint condition. Engine is loud a hell when pulling the boat but gets the job done.

BTW.... Couldn't help notice the Oil Pump "Made in China".

To make things MORE clear, the 12V/Bosch "P" pump engine was installed thru the last day of 1997 for the 98 model year. The 24V engine was installed starting the first day of 1998 for the 98 model year also known as a 98.5. If you notice there have been many changes made on 1/1 thru out the years, EMISSIONS.

The 94 12V engines that were produced during and installed in 1993 did NOT have a Cat (not sure about CA). They did have a pipe installed where the Cat would start being placed on trucks built on 1/1/1994 and beyond. This pipe made it easy to install a "test pipe" in stead of the Cat.

Many thought the resonator was a Cat on the 24V trucks.

I remember when those Dodge pickups first came out. I spent some time looking at a friend's Dodge truck. I remember that he had to replace the injector pump when the lower-oil diesel fuel came out and his pump went bad. Otherwise, he loved the truck. And then, when the new body style came out in the early 1990s, I thought that a Dodge 2500 with the Cummins would be my dream truck. However, I couldn't afford it. I finally bought one in 2015 and it's the best truck I've ever owned.
