6.7 Diesel fuel mileage

Looking at a 2019 F-350 with a 6.7 diesel. Currently have a Triton V-10 that gets about 9 mpg. (about 6 mpg towing.) The sticker doesn't list mileage on the diesel. Wondering if the diesel gets better mpg and will it be enough to offset the higher cost of diesel fuel?(3.31 rear end)

Not sure if you will ever off set the price of the engine/fuel but I do know you will be happy with the power/torque of the diesel over gas. I would recommend 3:73 gear ratio over the 3:31. My 2017 F-450 has the 6.7 Power stroke with 4:30 rear end. I get 14MPG solo and 9 MPG towing... If the wind is blowing, all bets are off. Bottom line IMO, you cant beat a diesel when towing.

My new 2018 RAM gets about 17 around town. Towing on our last trip i got about 9.5 MPG, but the engine only about 900 miles on it. With my Tundra 5.7 I was getting 15.7 around town and 8 MPG towing. With that being said the RAM tows WAY better.

Regarding the Ford Push-Rod 7.3, it will not be the miracle engine to replace the diesel, sorry. It doesnโ€™t come close to todays diesel torque, so it will still need to rev like a banchie. Put a turbo on it, and expect to need a 100 gallon tank. The 7.3 is designed to out-do the 6.4 RAM and the 6.3 GMC, period. Bragging rights...

I'm going a little different direction here. 3.31 gear ratio for towing? Please check the towing specs for that truck vs your trailer. That is a really high gear ratio. My Ram has 3.73 and I seriously looked at 4.10's.
Just my $.02 worth.

Actually there's been reports that owners of the '19 trucks getting better fuel economy than their previous year trucks.

I do agree that if it weren't for regens we would see ~.5mpg better fuel economy on the 6.7PSD.


I came from a 2012 F-350 dually with 3.73's to the 2017 F-350 dually with 4.10's. I lost 1 MPG loaded and unloaded.

I would be absolutely shocked if they added a turbo to the new 7.3. Talk about something that would get terrible fuel mileage.

F350 DRW 4:10 gear pulling 8,000 TT got 12. Pulling 15,000 fiver gets 9.5. Will pull almost all grades in 6th gear even with cruise engaged with the fiver.

I have never checked my mileage the old manual style since I have been running diesels. I do know that based on the miles I travel when I stop and fill up my 6.0 F-250 pulling a Sunnybrook fiver averaged somewhere in the 10 to 11 range. My diesel pusher Cummins motor home ran in the 9.5 to 10.5 range. My 2017 6.7 F-350 is running in the 10 to 11 range as well.
In my opinion you should never buy diesel thinking it is going to be more economical than a gasser. I purchased my F-350 because I needed it for the pin weight, trailer weight and more than anything else for the stability of a dually. JMHO.

You don't buy a diesel to save money. You buy a diesel because you want/need the pulling power.


But often a diesel will save you money. You should not count on it, but it happens.

With my 2014 F350 crew cab short bed diesel I get: no trailer, no air condition 16-17 mpg, no trailer with air conditioning 14.3 mpg, 33ft. 5th wheel with air conditioning 9.5-11 mpg.

I towed 20,500# combined with my 98 12V 2500 SRW 4x4 hand calc West Coast toeing 10.5 mpg AVERAGE. The RV was NOT over 12' 6" and was NOT a wide body.

Same roads but 29k combined wide body 13' 2" high towed with 11 HO DRW RAM 4x4 9.5 mpg hand calc.

Same roads 33k combined wide body 13' 5" high towed with current 15 DRW RAM 4x4 9.5 mpg Hand calc.

Same as above double towing at 35k combined 9.0 mpg hand calc.

I say the mileage is MUCH better!

Diesel are still delivering 25% better MPG's than any gasser on the market.
Yes the pre Emission diesels trucks may have got better mileage overall than the current generation DEF models.
However the current DEF models are a big improvement over the DPF era diesels when MPG's went down on diesels.
I'm not a big fan of the complexity of the current diesels but the current diesels all deliver lots of power and decent MPG's too.
