when we were traveling by car back in the "full service" days I never allowed anyone to open the hood or do any sort of service short of cleaning the windshield. I always stood right by the pump as the attendant was doing his thing while my wife stood outside and watched that side of the car. if we needed the restroom or a snack one of us would "stand guard" while the other ran the errand. assume the worst. now in the self-service world we live in it's not much of a problem but I still do not allow anyone to service or exam anything without my express permission.

Yes at a Walmart near home. I told them I had no money to fix anything.

There was one of these scams exposed back in the low 80's on TV where they claimed they heard a noise from M H rear end and told them it was the differential.
M H had cameras under it, guy removed cover and dumped metal shavings in oil.
Sold them their old parts back that were marked! Busted!
Your best bet is to call the police!

Was also an episode of I Love Lucie many YEARS ago where they were traveling and stopped at a roadside motel and the owner (Tennessee Ernie Ford) stole parts off of their car and was selling them back to them!

No. I don’t think think it would happen to me, I open carry at fuel stops and rest areas.

Most dealerships do this all the time to make extra money. They put there service people. on commission to sell you all kind of parts and service. You half to be careful where you get service today.

We don't travel as much as we use to. I guess we are getting old.I want to go out west one more time.

Another magazine (Popular Electronics) did the same thing with TV repair shops by the way.

TV repair shop! Haven't seen one of those for a long, long time.

Anytime someone walks up to your vehicle and says somethings wrong... and just so happens to have a shop next door to fix it, I would just assume scam.

I had one of those "panhandlers" (growing up, my Dad called them BUMS... I don't think that is politically correct these days!) come up to me at the highway rest stop that happens to be in my town, saying he needed $15 to get his keys back from the local police. I started asking him questions about what happened, and he ended up walking away. I am a volunteer firefighter so I know the local police and everything about this guy was scammy.

Funny thing, about 10 miles and multiple towns down the road I saw him at the next rest stop doing the same thing! He saw me and walked in the opposite direction.

This "fake" begging is so common, I find it hard to agree with people who say "Yea, but what about the people who really need help?"... I guess they are out there on the street corners somewhere, but I haven't seen them. The people I've heard of who really needed help were at shelters or churches actually getting help, NOT begging on the streets!

Utah is open carry and this is all happening in Utah. I guess it's not as big a deterrent as some think.

Either:
No thanks, it's a rental

or if needed:
Get the F*** out of my face
