Heading up I-95 to attend graduation ceremonies at University of Virginia towing a 37’ fiver.
Need advice around Richmond. Should I stay on I-95 through town to I-64 West? OR take 288 by-pass to I-64?
Should make it to Richmond before 3:00 pm.

Take 288 and bypass the Richmond downtown. I think it is exit 62 but not well marked.

Where do you plan to stay? Time wise, it is not bad but distance wise, there are better route options.

As above take the by-pass or leave Raleigh going west to Greensboro and take 29 North, 29 is a four lane straight shot to C'ville.

This was my first thought too. Not interstate but very nice route with a little better scenery though a tad bit hilly though not bad. And it's 100x better than fighting I95.

I have to agree with above. Traffic through Richmond can be awful, and though 29 IS hilly, with frequent speed changes and lots of traps, it is hardly ever busy. It is a lovely drive

Did the 288 bypass to I-64 two weeks ago. No problems when we did it around 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Like the previous poster said, use exit 62 on I-95.

Thanks. Taking US29 N out of Greensboro never occurred to me. Think we’ll plan our route back home that way. On the way there we’ll take the 288 bypass around Richmond.

Keep in mind that 288 in the morning, unlike VTLee's experience, can be gridlock, same in the PM. My secretary, who lives in Powhatan, takes 288 to Richmnod for work and gets stuck just about every morning.
