My neighbor has a 20?? Duramax series LLY. All diagnostics are good injector balance perfect no codes etc.

Idle/low cruise power settings quiet. Full throttle quiet. When the engine has to pull a bit on a small hill sounds like one cylinder has louder than necessary injection noise.

Another neighbor has 2 in the farm fleet that do the same thing they said to hell with fussin’ with it and drive them.

Anyone have experience with such a condition?

They're run at high pressure at mid throttle/rpm to help reduce emissions. That makes them more prone to noise. Sometimes additives or Biodiesel blends help. My LML injectors are a bit noisy on straight diesel but when I run B20 I can barely hear them.

Have your neighbor try Hot Shot Secret Stiction remover at next oil change. Then oil change after that, add HSS FR3. If by chance he's already changed his oil and won't be doing so again anytime soon, then add Motorkote Hyper lubricant to his oil now. Report back when you can w/ updates.

I am curious if you have tried any of these products you are recommending. I am always skeptical about putting additives into my very expensive engine which is in a very expensive truck. If so, what were your results?

Yes I have. They were developed for use for semis. The HSS stiction eliminator was orig developed to help w/ Navistars&Fords problem with the injectors on the 6.0 Powerstroke. It will work in all diesels. If 1st time, upon start up/shortly thereafter, you'll see a lot of white smoke from exhaust. This is caused by the HSS doing it's thing on cleaning out the injectors. Won't last terribly wrong. What happens is oil gets "baked" onto tips of inj thus causing what we would think is bad inj. when in actuality the inj is fine, just has the oil baked on it. The HSS will clean it off (white smoke) and save having to replace the inj.

Motorkote is a friction fighter. It uses whatever it's put in with as a carrier agent and adheres to metal surfaces, thus reducing friction/heat. MK can be used in engine oil, transmission oil, power steering/hydraulic oils. If you have a say a noisey engine, can pour MK into oil fill tube while running and the noise will go away. What the main goal is of MK is to reduce friction and heat thus translating into lower operating temps, better performance, better mpgs and HP along w/ reduced wear and tear. Yes I have used it and it does work. Many swear by a similar product in a white bottle, but this stuff is better.

I have also used HSS FR3 as a friction fighter in engine and like MK, it does what it says it will do. HSS Stiction eliminator tho is what I would use over MK Stiction Eliminator. Both HSS & MK products are aimed at the semi use, but are expanding the use into gas motors---just read product info/label to make sure it's ok to use. as some diesel products are NOT for use in gas engines. Example: MK has a product marketed for gas motors to help clean out Cat converters.

In the end, these are the only 2 product lines I would use or recommend for use in gas/diesel engines. May not be cheap, but they do work. Sadly, I cannot convince my company to try them. They would rather spend $$$ on repairs.

I can see these products working with the 6.0L which has injectors actuated by oil pressure, but don’t understand how this would do much with common rail injection. Can you please explain?

Best explained by HSS:

STICTION ELIMINATOR is composed of a safe and effective synthetic cleaner that dissolves the stiction found on oil-wetted components, resulting in a rating of 92% clean in the ASTM D4828 scrub test. A Group V synthetic ester assists in bringing deposits and additives back into solution, reducing friction and lubricating your oil system. Originating as a request by International Truck and Engine for a product that eliminated the performance and warranty issues caused by stiction in the Navistar and Powerstroke Hydraulic Electric Unit Injectors (HEUI injectors), Stiction Eliminator eliminates the sticky friction caused by byproducts of burnt oil, thereby eliminating the hard starting when cold, bucking, missing, chugging and black smoke. Stiction Eliminator restores HEUI injectors back to factory specifications and rejuvenates the engine to optimal performance by restoring the oil flow through the injectors, which corrects injector timing, fuel flow and the spray pattern of injectors. Stiction Eliminator cleans the gum, varnish and stiction while also lubricating everything the oil touches in the engine. Similar to HEUI injectors the same benefits hold true for many other engine components. Stiction can form on many other components as well. Turbocharger bearings operate with tight tolerance and extreme heat (reaching temperatures upwards of 400°F), and are a known victim of stiction buildup. Stiction Eliminator helps reduce spool time while building maximum boost sooner in the RPM range. Stiction Eliminator is an inexpensive preventative measure to avoid stiction problems in the future. Stiction Eliminator was formulated to be left in for the entire duration of your oil’s lifetime. Stiction Eliminator is not a flush that contains harsh solvents which can potentially harm your engine. Whether used to solve an existing problem or as a preventative measure, Stiction Eliminator is guaranteed to clean and protect your engine.

ACZL,
The Duramax does not have a HEUI injection system.

FOO,

That is true, but the product will still aid in the rest of the system. Only thing I can say is to try the HSS and if it works, awesome. If it doesn't, has a money back guarantee. It won't hurt the engine. If still in doubt, can always call them.

As for the Motorkote, no money back guarantee, but here again, try it and see for yourself.

Truckers swear by both products and they have also used them in their personal vehicles w/ great results. When I had my '03 F250 w/ the 6.0, I started using HSS around 80K (50K on motor) and ran it til I got rid of it at 160K. Lost just 1 inj towards the end, but that was due to an electrical issue w/ it. So in this case, I know HSS saved me from losing injectors. I've also used both HSS & MK in both my '15 F350 SRW & '17 F350 DRW and can honestly say the temps were cooler and gained couple mpg's as well as some extra oomph.

Many call items like this snake oil and same folks will use Lucas or Power Serve and say they are great, but won't try something different. Yes MK was originally aimed at semi use, but since as expanded greatly. If you ever used Rain-X or Slick 50 (in the day), MK is vastly superior to Slick 50. Rain-X, well nothing has beat that yet. And yes HSS was developed for Navistar, but here again, it can be used in all diesels regardless of injection system type and it will aid in cleaning out/off any burnt on oil and such.

If still not sure, simply call each one up and ask them your questions and concerns. You might feel all they are trying to do is sell you a product, but ask them for proof/videos. The MK bearing test should convince you about the friction it reduces.
