I recently purchased a '76 Dodge Motorhome. I am completely new to rving. I need to put some work into this, but I have a question about a rusted out part underneath. I will try to post a picture. It is a smallish box, maybe 12" x 12". it looks like there may be insulation or something in it, but coming out. It is located behind the rear axle, in the middle.
Can anyone tell me what it might be?

If it was for a battery , you would have cables going into it. It could be a box for anything that a previous owner added to it. Have you seen "Breaking Bad" ? Remove it to investigate what it is.

That was our first motorhome when I was a kid. Fond memories. Pics would be cool.

Just a guess, maybe a coach battery box/tray?
You might want to google "owners manual" for your rig, and see if you can find one. I see a couple on eBay and elsewhere. Might help?
Mike. Comments are anecdotal or personal opinions, and worth what you paid for them.
