...with strong environmental and public land protection voice?

Camper numbers are now 42 million or 12% of the population.

There are threats to public lands and wildlife that are integral part of our enjoyment of the outdoors.

A. Latest is an amendment to include cost considerations or revenue loss to protect endangered species.

B. Opening up national forest, parks and monuments to private interests.

C. Cut in national parks budget by 12% when they are behind in overdue repairs by $12 billion.

I intend to be a member to add my voice. Am already a member of a national conservation organization and two national park-national forest specific association.

The Nordic countries deny being socialist and are not. They are a mixed economy more Capitalist than otherwise. The are welfare states: Forbes magazine. Now I'm certain that the reply to this will be that "if it isn't in Pravada then it cannot be right" so for them:

" Speaking at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Danish PM Lars Lรธkke Rasmussen told students that he had โ€œabsolutely no wish to interfere the presidential debate in the USโ€ but nonetheless attempted to set the record straight about his country.

"I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism. Therefore I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy,โ€ Rasmussen said.

โ€œThe Nordic model is an expanded welfare state which provides a high level of security for its citizens, but it is also a successful market economy with much freedom to pursue your dreams and live your life as you wish,โ€ he added. "

I donโ€™t know why Socialism is relevant on this thread but for edumacation purposes, ask yourself why the Democratic Socialist countries of Denmark, Norway... have the happiest people on earth where nobody gets bankrupt to pay for medical care, nor college loan ow where old folks donโ€™t choose between eating cat food or paying for rent.

Sounds Wonderful, Especially for you Yosemite Sam :R

This is confusing. Is the NPS supposed to protect national parks for everyone to enjoy, or fence them off?

I thought NPS was supposed to keep "wild areas" open to the public, while still protecting it.

Seems logical... if the public pays for the national parks, the public should have access.

The goal is a balance but biased towards preservation, think access for future generations.

AFAIK 'wild' is not part of their mandate. Special and Unique are the focus, thus the historical side. Wilderness usually means little to no trace of humans. NPS can't meet that standard much of anywhere.

Oh and the 2017 NPS budget was 2.55 Billion the 2018 budget is 2.7 Billion, how can anyone except a democrat call that a cut? The 2019 budget is unknown at this time.

Actuals - 2018 $3.6B
2019 $3.2B

Cut - $0.4 billion

Same math-challenge calculations or sloganeering against deficit, now about to GOP Great Recession level of $1 trillion under the great Bush Jr.

I didn't realize the NPS budge was that large. Almost a Billion dollars more than what agesilaus found.

To misquote some politicians: A billion dollars here and a billion dollars there, pretty soon we will be talking real money.

Close most parks to the public. Keep a few open using mass transit.

The goal is preserve and protect, not splay open and exploit.

NPS has always had public access as part of their mission. This is directly opposite of wilderness declarations. There is a room for both types.

And defeats its purpose and its mission.

The president ordered business to leave China. And he's pissed at Fox news. What do you call that?

A smart move, Obummer sent everything to China and was more than pissed at Fox news "what do you call that".

I would love to see more people volunteer. I've been a NPS VIP (volunteer in park) since the year before I retired. The park service is very appreciative of those that volunteer.

In fact, the NPS would collapse without the volunteer workforce.

And yet, here in CA, all volunteerism has been banned. Camp hosts used to be volunteers - now the state mandates that they are paid positions. Obviously not at the federal level. On the state level, from top to bottom.

To avoid getting political I won't suggest which side of the political divide is behind that, so lets' just say they will be lock step with the sky-is-falling original subject of this thread. And of course it is CA, so identifying the politics behind it should be obvious.

It's been posted previously. I don't know why people keeps on jumping on the end of the thread asking the same thing that's already been answered, lol.
