Acadia NP (Portland) to Shenandoa NP - avoiding NYC?

We're heading to Shenandoa NP, leaving from Portland, ME
My mapping software takes us right through NY city!

I'd like to arrive in Shenandoa still alive.
What routes are better for avoiding the busy city areas?

Has I84 been paved? Last time we used it large sections of it were not fit for a tank.

What are you afraid of? My trips through the Bronx on I95 was one of the most interesting parts of my journeys from MA to SC. A little slow but lots to look at!


Breaking down can be life threatening. It's not a good place.

I've since given that route up, now going through central Pennsylvania instead. But that's because of the ridiculous high tolls on the NJ turnpike; nothing to do with NYC.
