Lyle You are certainly free to do however you want, but that is common around here, and this isn't California. However, I was merely stating that there are places that fill tanks that way. Maybe the next time you're out on the road and you need to fill a half-empty tank, that's all you'll find.
Not everything operates the way you think they should, last time I looked very few businesses get your okay before they do things. Don't like it? That's life.

Not a California thing. None of the places I get propane at do it this way. And no one has ever whinged because it wasn't totally empty when I came in.

So I guess now everyone should have 30lb container only because anything less is not worth doing the job.
Obviously not everyone thinks they are a PITN if there are lines of them being refilled - neither the customers who use them or the business that fills them.
I don't care if you want to wait until your tanks are empty, but I prefer to fill mine at home before the trip than in the middle of my trip - if that means filling it somewhere between 1/2 full and empty then so be it.

The industry offers an replacement OPD valve/gauge combo that uses a float inside the tank. Y can get it added next time your tanks are due for re certification.
Search OPD gauge in google.

Those gauges/valves look like the way to go. Ebay had them for about $40 for two of them. Thanks for the heads-up.

Contact your propane supplier/dealer about upgrading your bottles with float gauges/ valves. That ebay price might not look so good with the installation which must be done when they are emptied. you may end up with a higher cost than buying new bottles with the float giage valves.
Then sell your standard bottles to ?
