Don't tell that to the thousands of large RV rigs that travel it every year. While not as straight & level, as 89, it's a good route to travel.
You can't get to the North Rim any other way.

Came south from I 70 to Flagstaff in Sep. All good road but not a lot of services.

The 89 is passible by almost any vehicle including 18-wheelers. It is part of the primary route from Flagstaff to Salt Lake City.

Now, the 89A is another story and is not recommended for large RV's.

Five or so years ago it was a good drive. However I was โ€trailerlessโ€ on that trip but remember no concerns.
