Seems like there was a thread recently detailing many many experiences in Louisiana where they hunted RVs to award them speeding tickets or the most minor traffic violations. So I guess the lesson there was Stay on the Interstate thru LA.

How much time have you allowed? Remember, 1-10 is almost 1000 miles across Texas, so that will take a while. Where in Arizona are you going? I would suggest you make Van Horn your last night in Texas, and the next day drive clear to at least Las Cruces - we usually go to Deming because we're Escapees and there is an Escapees park in Deming.
I-10 across Texas is more like 850 +/- miles but either way it's a fur piece.
Houston: the by-passes around Houston are, for the most part, toll roads. We usually just barrel thru on a Sunday morning. absent a traffic wreck you should be thru at or above the posted limit.
San Antonio: SA traffic can also be a nightmare. there are two good by-passes to consider:
1) texas route 46. pick it up near Seguin and follow it ton New Braunfels. take texas route 337 around New Braunfels back to 46 to stay off city streets. rejoin I-10 at Boerne
2) North Loop 1604. this is a bit closer to SA than 46 but it will be fewer total miles. 1604 has a few lights on it but it's 4-lane all the way to where it re-joins I-10.
between Houston and San Antonio you'll see billboards for Buc'ees! excellent fuel stops...you'll be amazed at the size of these places. their C-Stores are bigger than some wal-mart neighborhood markets.

We go from Tucson every other year.
Not knowing your rig I will say this (we haul a 40' with a dmax)
We normally travel that route in November so now we are in December it will be worse.
We stay in fort Stockton Fort Stockton TX 3604 KOA Rd.

also
Admiralty RV Resort 1485 N. Ellison Dr.
http://www.admiraltyrvresort.com san antonio Tx
we stay in LA at Coushatta Casino Resort 776 COUSHATTA DR.
http://www.coushattacasinoresort.com/gaming/ KINDER,LA 70648
we stay in MS at Hollywood Casino 711 Hollywood Boulevard
www.hollywoodbsl.com bay st louis
This is backwards as we do I10 out of Az going to Fl.
Rule number one in TX when you can top off fuel ... do so.
I10 is being redone in LA near the 18 mile long bridge, quite a bit of construction this year.
We have done this route for at least 10 years and had no problem with the cops anywhere BUT always stay in the right lane except to pass and when going through Houston and other big citys staying in the lane the semis are in they do those cities all the time.
We find many drivers that are not very good on freeways so drive defensively.

It must be time to go, the suns out and I've got a full tank of diesel!
We have a granite fireplace hearth! Love to be a little different.

We use Passport America for a 50% discount and stay at Desert Willow rv park. We also stop in Deming where there are a couple of participating parks.
After going through El Paso once on I-10 during road construction we gave up on it, we now leave Van Horn and go north towards Gauadaloupe Mountains and then west where we hit the 375 loop on the east part of El Paso and then back onto I-10, we then head for Deming NM. You go over Franklin Mountain in El Paso but it isn't a big hill. The drive is very scenic looking at the Guad mountains in the distance

54 and 180 are 2 lane, 54 has a couple of dips that you need to slow down a bit, but well marked. 180 is also 2 lane but they have put in a couple of passing lanes recently, 375 is a divided 4 lane. They are not busy and passing is easy, much less of a hassle than I-10 through El Paso proper.

Yes, the road conditions are excellent, no potholes or broken pavement, the same or better quality as the interstates. We also used to take 180 from Carlsbad NM through to El Paso, it is good, except for the oil rig truck activity around Carlsbad.

If you are coming to Phoenix area many people recommend that at Lordsburg, NM you take 70 to Globe and then the 60 into Phoenix area.
