Either end of October or beginning of April. You'll miss the snowbirds and the temps are usually nice that time of year.

Don't come to FL June, July, or August. Hot, humid, bugs.

Spring break, the weather is nice, but places like Disney get PACKED. We have the Disney silver pass, and that's part of the block-out dates, due to the number of visitors they get.

IMHO, late Fall is the best time to visit. Temperature/humidity are better, less bugs, less crowds.

If you are thinking about staying at Fort Wilderness, make sure you have reservations as many months in advance as possible. Fills up quickly.

The drive was what I was looking forward to the most.

Many people don't understand that concept either. I agree with you. It not just the destination, but seeing all the countryside getting there. Granted, the sagebrush and scrub in some of the areas of West is not that attractive, but that is just part of the country we live in

If ya wanta see the REAL Florida consider Hiway 98 down the west coast , old Fl small towns , cowboys ,springs , woods , swamps and occasional alligator. No neon or tourist glitz .

Just how long is Spring Break in Seattle, here it is 10 days to 2 weeks. I would never consider driving that distance, round trip in that amount of time.

Im going to be adding time to their 2 weeks off. 1 month total.

Disney is so overloaded on "kids days off" it is horrible. Xmas and spring break are the worst.
best time might be mid feb or late nov. of course the miserable days mid simmer are in that group also.

You will be right at home then, traffic wise. Except the Freeways aren't as bad most of the time. Turnpike has limited traffic since it's a toll road and is pretty fast. I think the 'freeways' are not exactly free but have petty tolls on them down there. Almost all of the toll roads are south of Orlando and in an amazing coincidence that area is heavily populated by New York and other NE state natives.

I-95 north of this area is rated number four in traffic deaths nationally from a headline I read last week. I assume that's on Interstates.

I-10 is fine except for Louisiana, but there are only bad roads in Louisiana. Be sure to take the I-12 bypass around New Orleans.

Then get on I-75 off I-10 to Disney. Take the Florida Turnpike to Orlando off I-75. You can take the turnpike to Miami from there. Be warned that south Florida traffic is very very bad. It took us an hour to go less than a mile on US-1 in Miami. And I got off I-95 to look for a neighborhood in Miami drove a couple of blocks in the traffic and then fought my way back to I-95 and gave up on the visit.

Take the Turnpike south from Miami until it ends in Florida City head straight south to US-I to the Keys.
