I'm looking for some creative ideas about how I can make this summer camping season enjoyable for my wife. She has a really sore tailbone and figures she has about 100 miles of traveling in one stretch before her tailbone injury becomes more than she can handle.
She's tried all the cushy seats with the notch cut out of it, but those aren't enough. She needs to be able to lay flat sometimes to take pressure off the tailbone. We're going to test-drive putting a twin mattress in the back of our Expedition, and if that's not too bumpy we could, perhaps, have a custom mattress made. However, I'm not too sure how the friendly law enforcement would feel about that.
Any other ideas to share?

My girlfriend fell during Christmas on some slippery steps and is still dealing with it. However, her comfort in our Dodge Ram is good, and she is beginning to heal. You mentioned that the pillows don't work. Try another one, another brand, another design. That is all I can suggest.
There is something special about camping in an RV.

They make inflateable air mattresses for car back seats might work? She could try and get some kind of waiver from her doctor to satisfy the law . I know my husband had a seatbelt waiver after his shoulder surgery..

I took my wife on a two day 400 mile ride on my Harley. doc said she had a severely bruised tail bone. she used one of the cushions that looks like a small innertube and after about 2 weeks she was back to normal.

Wife and I both tried roller skating in our 50's , outcome was busted tail bones.
The simple doughnut cushions worked for us but nothing helped relieve embarrassment.

The medical grade cushion with hole in the middle being used after hemorrhoids should work.

Sorry to hear of her injury. I know how painful that can be, and it can last for years in some cases.
If you've tried all the pillows, I'll accept that as fact.
I can't believe a mattress in the back of a moving vehicle is going to be an acceptable relief, so I suggest you don't spend too much money on a first test. If you do, I'll bet you can rig up a seat belt that uses the existing attachment points, and if you've shown that effort I think LEO will be understanding.
When her injury becomes too painful in normal life, what does she do for relief? Stand up and walk around? Switch positions to something like a side-saddle sit? If you must travel while she is ailing, you might just have to accept that you will have to stop every hour (60-75 miles) and let her do whatever stretching provides relief, then continue with your slightly delayed journey.
