I bought my first truck for 5th wheel towing, a 4x4, on the advice of a coworker who told me if I ever really needed it, I would be glad I had it. That came true on a couple of occasions, most prominently when I had to pull my trailer up a steep, wet road to escape suddenly rising waters.
Everyone must decide for themselves how much risk or inconvenience they are willing to take or experience. One only knows in hindsight. I am not sure there is any one "right choice" for everyone, looking into the future.

Get the RWD and go have some fun. Worst case carry a recovery strap so one of the above 4WD trucks can help you out of the situation.

He's got a good point ESPECIALLY if you get a 250 diesel. Then you've got just as much payload as a 150. But you do need to check license fees some places like Cal. really hammer the 1 ton trucks. Other places like Minnesota really hammer anything smaller than a one ton. Example my one-ton is based on weight, plates cost around $150.00/yr. Ram 2500 I got rid of started at well over $500.00 a year. It was based on value.

Another factor I've not seen mentioned here - when backing into tight spots 4WD in much easier to maneuver. Cant exactly explain physics of that but it's true. Use it parking on side of my house every time.

I've had both 4X2 and 4X4 trucks over the years. Most of the time I never needed 4X4. When I had 4X2 trucks there were a few times that I wish I had bought 4X4s. But when I had 4X4 trucks there never has been a time I wished I had bought 4X2.

B.O. I'm a little confused. I read this to say the Ram 2500 was valued more than the 1 ton... does not pass my logic test.

From what you describe I think 4x4 is not needed. Sounds like it will only make climbing in and out of the truck more difficult.
I live off dirt roads and camp in the sand dunes with a 4x2 f250. The truck is also my daily driver. I purposely avoided 4x4 and we boondock 100% of the time in offroad type terrain. I've carried a tow strap with me since the 90s. I remember being pulled out once with my old Silverado. Every other time I'm pulling someone else out.
But I'm not buying brand new.

4X4 is never needed, until you need it. Prior post on backing and physics, I'll call BS?? What is helpful is the control backing in the low transfer.
