Ford's twin turbo 2.7 Eco-boost V6 (new and older versions)?

Saturday DW got T-boned in her 2004 Buick Rainier and it is going to be totaled we are pretty sure. Luckily she was hit in the drivers front fender tire area, if it would have been the door, she would have been in the hospital a lot longer than the 5 hours she spent there. So we drove a lot of different SUV's yesterday. Last one was a 2015 Ford Edge Sport with the 310 HP Eco-boost and 6 speed auto. We liked the handling and performance and it fit like a fine leather glove. Today we are going to look at a 2020 with the revised 335 HP 2.7 V6 and 8 speed auto. From what I have read these engines are in F150's and other Ford vehicles also. And that Ford did not design the original 2.7 L, but was involved with the up graded version in 2019.

What do you FORD guys know about these two engines and transmissions. Mileage is a lot better than what the 5.3 V8 got in the AWD Rainier, however they call for premium gas, which cost more. I read that FORD did not have the shift programming of the 8 speed worked out very well, does anyone know if they had TSB's to address that?

Road noise is an issue also, the Rainier had a lot of sound deadening that was not in the Chevy 360 platform. Of the vehicles we drove the 2019 Tahoe and Edge were the quietest. Used Highlander and Chevy Traverse had a fair amount of road noise. And we do not need a 3 row seating vehicle.

According to my brother his does very well towing that much weight. And it should. The 2.7 Ecoboost is rated at 325hp and 400lb-ft of torque and a 10 speed. My 1991 F250 with a 460 engine was rated to pull 12,500lbs with 230hp and 390lb-ft of torque and a 4 speed. In its day it was a towing monster with the highest tow rating of any pickup that year from what I could find.

My 88 TBI and 89 4bbl 454s were 235/385 power specs. They had a 16K gcwr iirc with 4.10 gears, and 19000 with 4.56. Actual tow rating was gcw less tare, so depending upon the cab options etc, that obviously makes the tow rating vary some. Only issue with the th400, was the really tall first gear.

Chris,
If some one had that motor in a 150, seems like power wise, should pull a 5-600 lb trailer readonably well. No, it's not going to keep up with a current day 400-500 HP TD. Should not be going 25 like some BN V8 s of you're from 70s and 80s.

5-600 or 5-6000???? Chris

5-6000....... looks like my thmb forgot a 0....
With the hp numbers given, figure it should do better than my old BB V8's..... better mpg too!

Wife drives a '15 Edge Sport, just hit 60K miles zero problem. Only replacements have been tires, the Hankooks wear rather quickly, but with the AWD they work very well in snow. One of the best cars we have owned.

Thanks for the report. Yep, a test drive of an used 15 Edge Sport was what started the whole thingy.

We are really enjoying the new Edge ST. It is a fun car to drive. Now one down side. The Ford Sync system and dash cluster in not even close to what is in our 2015 RAM with the 8.4 uconnect in center stack and the 7 EVIC cluster. Ford needs to rent FCA products and make their design engineers drive them until they figure out how far off the mark their Sync system really is, and fix it! Example, when in Maps from smart phone on the center stack display to do something with audio you have to push buttons multiple times to exit maps and then select audio.

Just about everything else is getting high marks. The ST "Sports Tuned" chassis is great and the 2.7L twin turbo Eco-boost is amazing.

Everything I've read about the 2.7EB engine made me wish I had test driven it more, but I got the V8!
Actually, most on the F150 forum that have the 2.7EB rave on it for power vs. mileage. Only ones disappointed with it are the ones with maximum options that kill the payload capacity.
Lots of positive Utube videos about it, too.

Well the deal is done for the new 2020 Edge ST with the 2.7L Eco-boost. Most of the bells and whistles. No sun roof, which is great as we did not want one. This was a service dept loaner with 1500 miles on it.
List Price $44,520, we paid 35K + tax and license. Guess I will have to turn all my text to Blue!!!!

That sounds like a good discount. I hope that you enjoy it!

I own two vehicles with sunroofs and have been surprised at how little we use them. I probably will not pay extra for a sunroof again. Due to the extra weight and potential repair costs it may even be a negative.
