I am interested in finding if anyone can recommend any dental insurance or discount plans that work well around the country. I have been going to Mexico, but that is off the table right now. Thanks for any suggestions.

I agree with this. Since I self insured several years ago, amazingly, I stopped needing to have another crown about every year. I also donโ€™t do X-rays. I would, if I thought I had a problem that necessitated them. I have cleanings every six months and havenโ€™t had a problem in several years. To each his own.

Years ago I bought a plan from Dentalplans.com It wasn't insurance but the dentists that honor it give a large discount.

Here's my two cents as a dentist. My practice only took the top tier plan at Delta. That's because even the top tier Premier plan is about 20% or more off my regular fees. The PPO plans are about a 40-50% shave. The HMO plans are OMFG unprofitable to the point where the dentist is paying the patient to sit in the chair.

As a business, the office has to turn a profit. If I offer quality dentistry at 40-50% off, while my office overhead is 75-80%, I won't be in business for long. Heck, my hygienist makes $50/hour. Front office staff is $25-30. Same with good assistants.

The offices that take the cheapie discount plans are by and large either upselling you to a procedure that's not on the fee schedule or they're massively cutting corners to make a profit. I can send your crown to a top flight lab or I can send it to a lab in China. You'll never know the difference in the beginning, but the metal from China is who knows what composition, nevermind the inferior porcelain they use. And fit wise, I've never seen a cheapie crown that really fits all that well. Cheap porcelain doesn't look right, and it fractures much more easily.

The same goes for those Mexican dental clinics. What recourse do you have if something goes wrong? At least in America you have access to our court system and the dental societies make sure our members are performing at the standard of care. I can't tell you how many patients I've seen who went to Mexico to have work done and then when they came back, they found out it was a disaster. I'm talking about bridges and crowns that have giant open margins, overhangs of porcelain leading to trapping of debris and therefore leading to gum disease, implants that are only a few months old with 50% bone loss, and worse.

The discount dental plans operate by finding the cheapest dentists in each town and signing them up for their plans. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want the cheapest guy in town cutting into my body.

The old adage of you get what you pay for is very true. Find a dentist who is willing to work with an all cash patient for a discount. Don't expect a 50% discount. If you get 5-10% off, I would say that's very fair. Find someone who doesn't jump around from chair to chair. Those guys double and triple book, and I just don't see how you can do very high quality work like that. At least I never could. I always booked one patient at a time and I took my time to make sure the procedure was done right.

I have a Delta Dental plan but the benefits are minimal at best. I suspect I would come out a head dropping the plan and paying cash.

I won't go to Mexico for any sort of dental work since a dental clinic in Algodones MX ruined all of my upper molars on the left side during a crown procedure. They apologized and refunded my money but that hasn't helped my ruined teeth. About the same time, I had a molar extracted on my upper right side. I examined the tooth and sure enough, the root was broken. So there's still a piece of root inside the gum, but it hasn't bothered me. I have met others with mixed feelings, some being satisfied with the work.

Iโ€™d second the working with a dentist on a cash discount. I also get most dental work done in Nogales, but we are in Montana for the summer. Recently had a dental issue I needed checked on so I contacted a dentist a friend referred. When they asked about insurance, I told them Iโ€™d be a cash customer. A new patient set up with xrays and him checking my problem was only $75. Their insurance new patient fee was $250, so I thought that was very reasonable.

Sorry to hear that, Kountryguy. The reason I asked was you can still get dental done in Algodones.

I recently went through the need to learn about dental insurance and am happy to share what I learned.
Delta Dental offers numerous plan types, and not all Delta Dental providers accept all the different plans. The one that is best for patients is worst for the dentist, therefore the only dentists that accept that particular plan may provide so-so treatment if you are particular. But you may get 'lucky' and find an office where everyone cares more about dental care than the mighty dollars.
The plan I was going to sign us up for had no waiting period, no annual maximum, no deductible and was around $200 annually for both of us. BUT when I visited the offices within the area (its based on your zip code) I would not want to get dental treatment at any of them. I called a relative who retired from 60 years as a practicing single office and he explained it to me.
Also learned that many of those dental offices 'share' equipment and specialists which is not a good thing.

The dentist I unfortunately went to initially (car accident broke 4 teeth) did such bad work that one year later I've had to have all work redone and pay out of pocket. Hard lesson, hope this helps someone who reads this.

Usually with dental insurance, one can self insure and at least break even but mostly be money ahead. You can expect the premiums to be around $30 to $60 monthly or more, and except for routine cleanings, have high deductibles and low limits for specific procedures. Shop around, understand exactly what it pays and how much; then, decide if just setting the money aside yourself and elf-insuring is not a better option.

Most insurance companies want you to pay your fair share, before they pay anything major, so there is usually a 6 month waiting period for major work

My suggestion would be to find a DDS you are happy with, and talk to him ( her ) directly about a cash discount.

With whatโ€™s happening in the country right now, I am pretty sure you will find most any dentist will be willing to work out a substantial cash discount
