Hoping to see Perseids. We live north of San Francisco in a pretty dark location.
The best viewing is after midnight as the Earth is then facing into the path of the shower.
I am not sure why, but the Perseids tend to "fizz". By that I mean the tail of some of the shooting stars leave a trail that has a wider than normal path with a scattered pattern.

Michigan has about an half a dozen Dark Sky Parks. I don't have the link handy, but it shouldn't be that hard to find.
